<p style=”text-align: left;”>Nipped over to a local machine dealer to bring my workshop in to the 21st century with new to me little Boxford cnc machine, while there I noticed a Marlco knurling tool,  he agreed to sell it for a reasonable price, I’ve been after one for a long time they don’t seem to come up very often,  the only one online is £180 from home and workshop which is a bit steep.</p>
Does anyone know of a supplier of good quality 5/8 7/32 knurling wheels? Zoro’s the only place I’ve found.

Pretty sure mine came from Zoro something over 5 years ago.

They have been perfectly satisfactory, certainly better than what was in it. One was D shaped, presumably due to being seized on its pivot. The other wasn’t much better. Suds in the pivot bearings being the root cause methinks. Took a good deal of work to get the wheels spinning freely. But I know for certain the thing hadn’t been used for over 20 years. Clearly been rode hard and put away wet.

As I recall matters Cromwell also listed them back then but were more expensive.

Superb tool. Once you get the setting knack it’s the end of all knurling worries for any job small enough to fit inside the arms.

I have the instruction leaflet in pdf format. PM me if you’d like a copy.

Thanks I will do that, I’ve been after one for ages, everyone who has used one has good things to say about them, can’t wait to try it unfortunately the wheels are pretty  scarred, I  don’t think it’d give very good finishes, the pins are pretty worn too, replacing them is probably a good idea

MSCDirect are agents for the US brand ‘Interstate’ but I think their range sizes go up 16ths – I guess you could shim a narrower wheel.. ..In any case there are pages of it, I’ll leave you to do the legwork, you might find something..

I suppose you might be able to make new pins or bushes to take metric wheels? – tho’ I’d case-harden them..

Hardened dowels do just fine as replacements for worn pins.

Work fine on mine after I decided that the old pins were past their sell by date despite all my refurbishment efforts. But who can buy two dowels and where from? Think I ended up with a bag of 100 so ought to be plenty left over if you’d like some.

i purchased some from Chronos a couple of years ago and they are OK, maybe not quite as good as the original one that came with my Marlco tool some 50 years back but they work just fine for me.

PS use hard steel dowels for the pins, that’s what the originals are.  Or you could just use Silver steel and harden & temper to a dark straw colour.

Just checked my wheels which did indeed come from Zoro

                        Made by JHL, size is 5/8″ x 5/16″ x 7/32″

                        Coarse JHL 2100A

                        Medium JHL 2210B

                        Fine JHL 2120C

Pain to find on the Zoro site because they are listed by the shank size of the JHL knurling tool they fit:-

“High Speed Steel Knurls To Suit Two Knurl Holder 3/8 x 7/8 x 5 1/2 By JHL”

Pins are 7/32″ diameter x 5/8″ long.  I bought a pack of 20 from Boneham and Turner for £ not very much. About 12p each these days I think. Less then.

I have a small box of random wheels at home I will check what I’ve got. Remind me if I haven’t got back to you in a day or two, I am very busy so might forget.

Thanks for all suggestions,  much appreciated,  I’d love a couple of pins if that’s OK Clive.

And many thanks Pete for checking if you have any lying around,  I’ll happily give you a few quid if you have anything suitable as a pair from Zoro is pretty expensive,  although given my light hobby use they’ll likely last me forever.

Good news on the ex school boxford cnc, they must have never used it, the pdf file boxford sent me showed this machine at £16k and schools selling them off for a few hundred quid, oh well it’s somewhere better now, in my workshop, got the manual controls working early and examined the ways, it’s literally like new,  I’m pretty pleased to say the least, all the original scraping looks new after a quick clean.

Thanks Johnf, that’s a pretty reasonable price for a pair at chronos.
