Hi there, I have been looking through old magazines for projects and thought the Manx Norton model starting in volume 113 No. 2824, 10th November 1955 would be suitable. Looking through the article though I could not see instructions for making the Tyres. Has anyone made the model or knows about it ? I may just not be looking properly and missed it, that happens a lot these days. Either way if someone can help it would be much appreciated.

I don't have those back issues but ME recently had an article over about 3 issues on how to make moulds and cast rubber tyres.

The ME articles are in 2842 2844 and 2846

2830 and 2860 mention Mr Hoopers model but there are only the 3 build articles

You do not say what scale you are planning to work in, Mr Hooper's Manx was 1/6th…

As an interim whilst you mould your own, or indeed as an alternative, there have been a number of plastic motorcycle kits in 1/6th, 1/8th, 1/9th from which you may be able to source the tyres – or approach the manufacturers for 'spares'. Of course many of the kits are of Harley Davidson 'cruisers' on 16" rims which are going to be unsuitable, but there is a mix of other bikes and wheel/tire sizes out there….for instance the Harley WLA (18" rims might suit).

                Just a thought…

                Regards,

                Phil

Alex's method for making tyres was pretty involved and will be difficult for narrow motorcycle tyres- but he was making fully functional beaded tyres!

I keep putting off making tyres for a model I have in mind (one of dozens…) the method I read years ago and have in mind is to make a wooden master tyre (perhaps only a half) and use this to make a split plaster mould. this is liberally treated with silicone mould release (furniture polish). A layer of synthetic rubber is pasted on the inside to give a bubble free surface, then the remainder of the mould filled.

I think it was Ted Jollife who fitted one of these tyres to a wheel on a stick and took it for a lengthy evening walk with his dog every day for a month or three. Apparently it wore very well, but he got a reputation as an eccentric.

Thank you all for the information you have supplied, it is very useful. I will see if I have copies of the relevant magazines but will look at making correct tyres probably from MDF and then making a mould from them and casting rubber. The model scale may be 1/4 or 1/6. A larger scale will be a little easier, especially the wheel lacing so I will check that it can be completed before starting. When progress is made I will post reports.

A very good source of information on making wheels, tyres etc is Gerald Wingraves' Complete Car Modeller http://www.crowood.com/details.asp?isbn=9781861266446&t=Complete-Car-Modeller-Vol-1 . He is a master craftsman who can write well. Worth buying or borrowing the book for the wonderful photos of his models
