Yep sounds like you were just rocking the lathe on it's flexible drip tray, Headstock , bed or cross slide would all be reasonable places to mount the Dti for that test

Thanks for confirming the motor is wrapped around the spindle, if you have time a few photos with the end cover removed would be interesting as would a short video.

My apologies if I've wasted anyone's time. At least a valuable lesson has been learned.

Not wasted my time! The valuable lesson here is that it is tricky to do tests on machine tools that measure one parameter, and one parameter only. It is common on here to see a measurement made, and solutions sought, for a problem that doesn't actually exist. It is best to make a series of measurements, with an open mind, and find a cause, before contemplating "solutions".

          Thanks Andrew.

          But…. photo's…

Given its size, I thought the motor must be in the big box at the rear…

          Box

          But no, it was empty,,,

It seem the motor is, in fact, around the spindle…

          another angle…

Small, isn't it? (let's hope it lives up to its hype).

Such a compact "800W" motor, yet no cooling provision – do they use the headstock casting as a heatsink ?

Could you confirm how many wires are contained in the cable from the motor. What passes for an electrical diagram in the EU Vevor "manual" only shows 2 wires to the motor, but I would guess 3 or 4 (3 phase motor with maybe an eath direct to the stator).

As it is a brushless motor more likely to be 7 or 8 allowing for the sensors etc. Probaly run as two cables one for power and another for control, 4 cores to each.

Make something, and see where it goes to your liking. Then try to figure out what went wrong where and why. As a bonus you gain experience.

That's a much better and more efficient way of learning about your new machine than making decisions based on measurements you don't understand. I've never put a DTI near the spindle of either of the lathes I've owned, although I do spend some time fiddling with the change gears to get them to run quietly…
