Looked on the internet on how to clean the MagSafe socket on a MacBook Air.

      Clean Magsafe socket

However my socket has arced a little, and the black residue won't come off with a stiff brush. Any ideas on cleaning it.

I am aware that by turning the Magsafe plug upside down, the burnt plug and burnt "pad" are reversed, but that makes matters worse with the connection.

      Pinout:-

      Gnd +16.5v sense +16.5v GND

Best cleaner I know of is Servisol … but, given that the contacts are quite heavily Gold-plated, it shouldn’t really be necessary sad

… are all the springs working nicely ?

Thanks Michael, yes, the pins seem to go in and out OK. I do wonder if it is necessary for both power pins to connect to the MacBook to pass sufficient current without overheating the "working pair".

Would the SERVISOL need to be "agitated" with a blunt cocktail stick ?

Wouldn’t harm yes … but I’ve generally found it effective without much mechanical assistance.

Years ago it was available in a squat little can, but ‘progress’ means I have only found it in aerosol cans these days.

I usually spray some onto a cotton bud and wipe the contacts with that.

I would recommend wrapping the cotton bud in cloth – I cut bits from an old handkerchief as needed. For difficult cleaning the weave of the cloth seems to act like a non-abrasive abrasive with the cotton bud underneath holding some fluid.

I do not recommend taking apple mac book or mac book pro into the workshop. I did it once and learnt very quickly that they have magnets all over the place. My speakers no longer work due, I believe , tometal getting into the internals via the very small holes down the left had side of the keyboard. The MagSafe socket on my earlier MacBook I cleaned out very carefully with a needle and a fine pair of tweezers.

Strange (or not) how some manufacturers need to design unique parts of their products to ensure customer loyalty. Perhaps the arcing problem could be overcome by connecting the charger to the product before plugging it into the mains? Bet Apple haven't thought to put this in their bible.

                      Regards Ian.

Not just fine gritty swarf, beware pencil " lead." It's Carbon, conductive! Don't want that on a component board. So mind where you sharpen pencils.
