Having tried a lot of unsatisfactory ways to store old copies of magazines I have settled on trying these:

      dsc_0001 (2).jpg

Lid just slides over the bottom so will accommodate fat magazines. I am hopeful that they will at least keep them flat and relatively good condition in the loft. Whether I can find the one I want is another matter…

Search for 'A4 plastic storage boxes' on eBay. Bit expensive perhaps but so are the mags!

Morning Steve, I would perhaps do a trial first as I lost a lot of books and magazines once by storing in the loft due to damp. My books were in tea chests which is perhaps not as good as your storage boxes. However I advise caution as you obviously value your magazines. Maybe try some old gardening mags over Winter first.

Storing anything here in my flat is difficult as there not that much storage space and no loft either. I hated doing it but I had to cancel my Magazines as a consequence. I might try the electronic variety once I've sorted my requirements machine wise.

I might be wrong but they may do an electronic version on disc for this site? I'm perhaps wrong.

In any event let the gang know how you get on.

Perhaps a magazine binder (to hold 12 months issues) as an alternative to the other "free" subscription gifts might suit some people?

When my magazines come in now, both from this country and America I carefully remove them from the plastic bag by cutting to top open with a pair of scissors. I then carefully have a quick look thru for things to read later.

Then out to the workshop, onto the big guillotine and clamp the mag with the support foot, remove the staples and crop the last 3mm off the fold so I have separate pages.

Then back into the office and I have a high speed sheet scanner that can take a complete mag, scan both sides in hi-res full colour in under 2 minutes. Save it as a searchable PDF and the mag goes back into the bag it came in, to be filed away in case I need to see the hard copy. Backup goes onto two different cloud storage systems every night and weekly onto a SSD storage system.

Excellent Neil I hope it works out particularly for an annual or even as a special on one subject similar too you know who paper backs.

Here is my method of storing both magazines and books.

The outer edges of the shelves are supported using threaded rods running through drilled holes.

The rods rest on the bottom shelf, that itself is on the floor, with nuts and large washers screwed up to the underside of the shelves.

                      Geoff,

If you had used 1" boiler plate you could have got away without the threaded rods………………………………wink

Tactile magazines are nice but to get the most out of any "Library" it really needs to be digitised

Then you can keep your entire Library on a single hard disc, search your entire library in 10 seconds and display any page from your Library in 20 seconds

You can also carry boxfuls of it around on a tablet for reading on the move or when on holiday

Several years ago Tesco did re-sealable freezer bags in various sizes, all marked in actual dimensions and the largest (15″x10″(?) were just right size for storing ME/ MEW/EIM/LIVE STEAM/ LLAS/ RAILWAY WORLD/ RAILWAY MAGAZINE.The other supermarkets also did real dimension bags but not as large as Tescos In recent years, they have all gone to smaller
bags, choice of sizes but all now called “small”, “medium” and “large”.
Even Tescos “large” is not large enough any more.

An electronic collection of back numbers on DVD in PDF format would be nice. There are some illegal ones around but it would be nice if an official one could be made available. The collection on the site is OK but not the easiest thing to find what you want.

Popular Mechanics appear to have done some sort of deal with google, I presume they get a cut of the revenue

There's 100+ years of good reading in the ME magazine and anything which brings more people into the hobby and makes it more accessible is a good thing

Its a bit like CornFlake packets – once you have made the shelves, they change the size of the box.

So here is a controversial thought……………

My wife, myself and our dog live in a 10 roomed house ( one room we even designated as a "library&quot …….. and we have filled the whole house with "stuff" ! We decided recently that the accumulation of magazines ( Model Engineering, Photography, Needlework, Patchwork, Gardening, Cookery etc.) must stop – before we needed an extension built! I now view mags. in our local newsagent and purchase only those of "vital" or immediate interest. I also made the painful decision that some of the archive would have to go and so I am slowly trawling through and extracting "stuff" that is not of vital relevance. I must also get out of the habit of thinking "That's an interesting model / modification – I'd better collect the series in case I want to make it some day." I already have enough projects, both current and pending, to last me I think.

I agree with Russell that electronic collections would be of use but, there again, I don't find reading "stuff" on screen very comfortable – especially in bed!

                                          Oh dear – decisions, decisions……….

                                          What's to be done ?

Nor me – but when I do it I vastly prefer it on the iPad. For one thing you can enlarge any section just by a finger-spread gesture (can't do that with the printed copy come to think of it). Good for tired eyes. And it works in bed (and in those other "places" one might want to read). Also works in the dark.

Sure there's no substitute for paper of the right quality unless it has yellowed over the years. However reading magazines with shiny paper such as Model Engineer is made also has it's reading quality degraded. This shine usually forces the reader to re-angle the pages frequently to make them legible I find.

When reading from electronic screens I usually dim then down which reduces the glare and makes things easier on the eye.

A Scotsman once said to me, "Hawk eye the noo. If yea canny read that you need glasses pal." He was right.
