        Hi all,

I'm busy rebuilding my Clarkson MK1 grinder and have most parts repainted and refitted to the machine but I am looking for some ideas or pointers for painting the Clarkson name on the base casting. I have painted the name area white and would like to do the raised letters in red and keep it neat and tidy without overpainting the white background. I can't see any other way of doing this without trying to cover the area with bits of masking tape. Any ideas?

You can get liquid latex masking from artist  suppliers which can be brushed on with a artists brush. Then paint the letters and when dry peel the latex mask off. The result will depend on how neatly you put the mask around the lettering.

              Would a paint-roller do the trick, I wonder ?

If the background paint is dry the job can be done by hand with an artists brush, any overpainting can be cleaned off immediately with a cotton bud moistened with white spirit. You need a steady hand for this, a hand rest can help, signwriters use them, just a stick with some padding on the end.

                Nice paint job!

Thanks guys. Went for the roller idea. Masked off the area around the name and used a cut down gloss foam roller. Turned out pretty good. A bit of cleaning and a few touch ups and its done. Managed to get the table cleaned up and refitted today as well.

With signwriting like that you should be able to depose Foggy Dewhurst in Last of the Summer Wine.disgust

Thanks guys. Neil thanks for fixing the photos. They were the right way up when I uploaded them and don't know why they got rotated.

I thought I would add an update to this as the machine is more or less finished. It's now powered via a vfd with stop/start, EStop and reset controls. A worklight is also fitted. All that's left to do is to make a blanking plate to cover the hole left from the old starter unit, some new tee slot bolts and a captive nut for the universal holder. It's been a nice little project.clarkson mk1 1.jpg

Very nice job indeed. And a very handy machine for the home shop.

I found our local hardware store sells tiny little "cutting in" paint rollers for getting into corners etc when painting. About 50mm long and 25mm diameter roller. One worked perfectly for the raised lettering on our Myford.
