Well said Julian, you said it better than I can. I also think Deltic007's comments are unfair, especially as he says that he also runs a business in which case he should be aware of supply line difficulties.
For what it is worth, living in a rural area, mail order is often the only way to get materials and so it is a case of ordering, in advance if possible, and then waiting.
We do have an excellent hardware shop in the nearest town whose prices compare reasonably well with the bigger chains, but as I have discovered recently, for slow moving parts they only stock one item, and then order a replacement when the one item is sold. However, even for items they do not stock, they will order up specially, hence delays tend to be normal here. This, of course, leads to the situation where I carry spares of parts which I know will eventually fail and have to be replaced: thus I am seldom caught out.
