Can anyone recommend a supplier of M5 x 0.5 pitch threaded bar and nuts? brass or stainless steel, to repair a 3D printer, ideally up to 500mm long

A search for stainless 5mm studding on Ebay brings over 3000 hits.

So do I, but unfortunately M5 x0.5mm pitch is metric fine.

Assuming you have a lathe, how about a slightly off-beat method of making some.
              I've never tried this;

Two obvious issues with threading long bar are, manually threading- the die can easily run off, and for many lathe's there's no through hole in the tailstock.

How about quickly knocking up a die holder for use in the 3/4 jaw chuck and feeding the 5mm bar in from the tailstock direction, rather than vice versa, as normal practice.

To hold the 5mm bar, maybe use a small boring bar holder on the cross slide toolpost; that way you could have just a bit protruding in the direction of the headstock, and keep re-positioning the toolpost along the bar as the job progresses.

0.5mm thread is ISO M5 fine – the usual Tool station etc threads are ISO coarse 0.8mm thread – I can’t recall any fine threads in their collection. Suspect you need a more specialised supplier.

Yes, Bill, it was sloppy of me not to read things more carefully.

How about this? (It doesn't give the pitch though.)

Thanks to all for the suggestions – I've spent hours looking for a supplier and called a few

To your point Bill, I have ordered a couple of M5 x 0.5 dies to thread my own bar as a last resort – I do like your idea too!

I know Darren @WeDo3DPrinting and he is on my list of contacts to call tomorrow

make a die holder to go in the toolpost and then you can power feed the die at the right pitch. Relying on the die self feeding will guarantee pitch error which might or might not matter. If you have a travelling steady you could screwcut it down to say 3/4 depth then finish with die

Had to buy some M6 ISO fine bar 300mm long in brass about a year back and used GWR Precision Limited they don't list M5x0.5 but they will make it. Cost about £7 for each piece but I couldn't buy the brass for that.

Duncan’s suggestion of travelling steady followed by a die to clean up the cut to size would be my favoured method.

I would expect that Sterling Bolt and Nut Co Ltd in Peterborough could source it. Not the cheapest option, mind.

If you are looking for m5 studding and nuts, why don't you just use standard M5? Or is this for a feed screw?

Just re-read my reply and seem to have a grocer's apostrophe blush

Re Bill's post previously about the ebay studding; on the page, the vendor refers to nuts also being available, and on the nuts page he has the following comment

High quality M5 Nuts Standard thread as used in many 3D printers

This place supplies up to 300mm lengths could be worth asking if they can supply longer:

I would think a thread die cut rod would be a bit sharp for a lead screw application, a rolled thread would be preferable.

Juddy has the right answer the owner makes the threaded rods himself so they are not cheap, incidentally he makes them for CEL Robox 3D printer upgrades which is exactly what I am looking for

                                      Thanks again to all
