After the great help on my earlier post regarding a switch to use with my recently acquired Myford speed 10, I’m afraid this novice is back with further basic queries!

I have a copy of the Myford notes on installation, operation & maintenance. I’ve got to the stage of wanting to lubricate/grease. Fig.6 shows the various points for attention – however my headstock bearings appear to have greasing nipples rather than oil cups. Two grease guns came with the lathe so I assume I use these (no idea why there are two…), but what grease should I use once these are empty? Also what oil would people recommend for the lubrication? (Sadly) I only have 3-in-1 in stock from keeping my daughters bicycles in order!

As always the advice will be much appreciated!

      Merry Christmas

mike, you have two guns one for the grease and one for oil.
The grease I use is ordinary grease bought from halfords, LM I think it is, and the oil is Tonna oil.
The headstock bearings I fill with grease a couple of times a year, I clean up around the brgs. and then pump in the grease until it shows at the mandrel gap.
I then clean up all the expelled grease and then use the oil gun to oil the other points on the ML10 like the tailstock shaft and oil the leadscrew brgs.
          Very simple really.

I’ve seen a few milling machines which have had grease injected where oil should have been used- slideways, some bearings & leadscrews ( not Myford lathes) , the grease then stops lubrication and wear occurs. Some manufacturers suggest that grease should not be used on their machines. So when the oil gun runs dry don’t use the grease gun!

              Hi Mike

The ML10 manual specifies Nuto H32 OIL for the headstock bearings. Although it looks like a grease nipple I suspect this is designed for the wonderous( and much maligned) Myford Oil Gun which ejects oil under pressure. ( It also leaks all over the bench if you’re not careful! )

I can send you a PDF of the manual if you wish – I have sent you a message with contact details.

              Regards

Norman I think the first ML10s were running in cast iron bearings which obviously used oil for lubrication but the later ones ran in taper roller bearings which used grease. David

The taper rollor bearing ML10’s are Greased!

Well …………. I missed the Speed 10 bit in your post Mike.
My own ML10 was the plain bearing type and the manual I have is for that version. My apoligies – I stand corrected!
It seems then that you are correct in your surmise that one is for applying grease to the headstock and the other is for those other parts needing oil lubrication. So you will still be able to join in the Myford oil gun experience!
                    Sorry for muddying the waters.
You will find some more discussion on the oil guns on the current Myford / RDG thread .

The “latest” oil gun made by wanner is a winner, but I bought mine some time ago when they were not quite so expensive. Yes it does not leak!

On the subject of taper roller bearings, I use Nuto H32 (ie 32 grade hydraulic oil) on the taper roller bearings fitted to my Super 7 and also the taper roller bearings in the Harrison M300. Please do not say that Myford Super 7s do not use taper rollers, mine does.
