Sounds like both ends working on reducing the need to top up John. 14.7v with normal antimony content is about right for a full charge, even with higher levels. The antimony was upped and it sounds like GM decided to reduce the alternator voltage as well.
The grids in batteries were cast. I mostly parted company with batteries when they had decided to go for lead calcium. Rather than cast they were aiming on making them from sheet by perforating and stretching etc. The same machine could then lay down the oxide pastes on them. I've no idea how well it worked out as Lucas was preparing for a massive raid on the pension fund by selling 1/2 shares of all of their companies and I was shunted some where else, EV's. Yuasa bought half of the battery business and later Chloride took over the electric vehicle development. It was 50/50 before that. I was then moved to Girling on ABS and later sold to an American company and later still a Swedish one.
While all this was going Lucas were arranging for many bits and pieces to be made in Taiwan. One person did most of the work on that – a UK Taiwanese.
