its a shame there wasnt more models there but its more a show to fill your workshop with goodies.
i went on saturday and the place was full to bursting and they say theres no money about but there was plenty being spent on the stands!

I’ve always thought this too, not a particularly great show for viewing other people’s handiwork, but useful for browsing the tool stands. I picked up a few small items at the show.

Unfortunately I then made the mistake of checking how much I’d saved by attending. I rather disappointingly discovered that I could have got the same items from the same sellers for less, had I had purchased online, even if postage was taken into account. I’ve got the uncomfortable feeling of having been slightly exploited.

Consequence is, I probably won’t attend again either. I’ll just shop online, save the fuel and entrance money, and spend the balance of my time in the workshop.

          Hi Chris,

I’ve always been suspicious of the ‘Special Show Prices’ notice or similar on many stalls. That confirms what I thought,

          Best regards

It’s nice to browse though; went to Reeves today and its always disappointing how little they have ‘on display’. If there had been a few flywheels out front I’m sure I would have bought one at random to inspire a new engine – this has happened to me at shows.

Probably a sign of the times.
In the last week I have gone round the small screw rack and made a list of what’s missing or low and went online and ordered them, 16 packs of screws in 100’s from M3 x 8 up to M5 x 50 £25 total goods delivered to the door.

Same with drills, restocked up for just over £12, again delivered.

Tonight is the abrasives list, no opening hours to worry about or faffing about waiting.

Just before Christmas I called into the local ironmongers for some crocodile saw blades for ripping old pallets up for the fire. No idea how the price compared, didn’t check but from leaving the shop to getting back was 3/4 of an hour because some clueless ijit had to look at every screw size stocked.

Never again, that item has now been chalked up to shop on-line.

                  Hi John,

Once again, I have to agree with every word you say, I live in a small, but not so remote village, and it costs me a couple of litres of fuel to get to my nearest so called ‘Engineers Stockist’ only to find he doesn’t have much of what I need these days and what he does have is at exorbitant prices.

It is also easier to compare prices on teh net. I bought a Sievert Propane torch kit and saw prices ranging from around £50 to over £80 for the same product. It still pays to shop around, but it is so much easier to do so in the comfort of ones own home.

                  Regards

                    Gentlemen,

I went on the Sunday with two friends, left our car at Sandy Station and caught the bus from Ally Pally Station, we spent four useful hours wandering around and I managed to get everything on the list plus a few other bits. Enjoyed talking to the people on the Victoria pond stand as this was my Grandfathers boating pond and they always have photo’s for me to look at.
I went to Sandown a few years ago and it was spoilt by trying to get there, I regularly travel around the M25 with my job so dont want to do it for my hobby and there I find is to much space. I much prefer the London show.

Sour grapes, looks as though this Forum is being blamed for lowered attendance at AP. See todays EiM

Yes,I read the editorial and think 'sour grapes' is about right.

Similar happened in 2009 when another event was being staged there. The car parks were full when I arrived having had a 2-1/2 hour drive (including battling through the traffic in Muswell Hill) to get there. Ended up parking in Wood Green (no courtesy coaches from there) and the older some of us model engineers become the steeper the climb of AP mountain becomes!

Mr EIM editor might as well have blamed the BBC for televising the snooker tournament as well as blaming this forum.

I remember a time when that magazine used to count every model at a (different) show and crow about the total. Show jealousy is not exclusive to model engineering as any Landrover enthusiasts will know every year we get a load of tosh about the Billing exhibition.

Looking back at the very first post there is some confusion over the identity of shows. LME is what we used to call Pickets Lock for its first few years. It has only been in those two venues.

The ''daddy of all ME shows' I have attended in Horticultural halls, Wembley, Alexandra Palace, Olympia, Sandown, Ascot, and back to Sandown. I can't remember if it has ever been to Earls Court and Seymore Hall was before my time.
