Well with Andy’s attitude it is no surprise if the traders are stopping attendings jhows if he feels we should not be buying stuff from them. There are good saving to be had if you order in advance and pick up the goods at a show to save postage costs, buy from 2 or 3 suppliers and you have soon covered your fuel and entry fee, that is the way I have always looked at it. And in the days of SAE for catalogue, sent cheque with what you think postage will be, etc it was always far simpler to hand over cash which often got you a bit of a discount too.

As for connecting with people yes its good to meet people I otherwise talk to on forums or by email, often we will exchange materials etc and the odd bit on money also changes hands. A show is often part way between the two of us so makes for equal travel and as we would be going to the show anyway it’s no extra cost in fuel or time.

The costs of insurance has been the demise of many shows ! Noel.

Extra security staff these days, lots of HSE restrictions probably, independent exhibition companies instead of it being a side effort for the magazine introduces a new bunch of managers to be overpaid. And it has to be paid for by the trade exhibitors. Ticket sales are the managers bonus. Clubs get in free so you can’t run a show on just club stands.

AllyPally station is some distance away at the bottom of the hill although when built the venue had a station inside it (platform and cutting still there). Many the time I have had to make several trips down to the car park with my heavy purchases.
Back in the Wembley days I did go by tube, and occasionally found myself back at my home station having to balance a bag of new iron on my bike for a 3 mile walk.
And a new year show is either inconvenient for the traders who wanted a break or a loss of customers who did take a break to see family away in the provinces.
