Whenever I start to log in to my account a helpful prompt comes up with my full email address. Unfortunately this is an address I had with my previous ISP and so I have to continue typing in my current address. My profile was updated when I changed my ISP over a year ago, but still the prompt comes up with my old email. This has become very tiresome but I can find no way of getting it to remember my new email address. Can anyone help?

Howard, it sounds like you may need to clean out your browser’s cache memory and cookies, you should find the cleanup utility under the tools heading on the browser toolbar.

The memory of your log-in addresses for websites are generally stored on your pc rather than the website.

 

The other thing you can check is by going into your account details once logged in, and change your contact details there.

John, I’ve just tried what you suggested and deleted cookies and temporary internet files, but it still prompts me with the old email address. I don’t have this problem with any other sites which is why I thought the problem lies with the model engineer site. I updated my account details with my new email address a year ago. I’ve checked that it really does have my new email address. A further detail is that if I type in my new address and then press enter with a blank password it (of course) invites me to try again. This time it does prompt me with the correct address and “remembers” my password. Unfortunately at the next login it reverts to my old email address.

Hi Howard,

 

If you’re using Internet Explorer you could try the following.

 

– Start Internet Explorer

– Select the Tools Menu, Internet Options

– Select the Content Tab

– Find the Auto Complete section and click on the ‘Settings’ button.

– Click on the ‘Delete Auto Complete History’ button.

– Exit everything.

– Restart Internet explorer and follow the above steps to go back in and select(using the tick boxes) any auto complete settings you need or want.

 

If you’re using a different browser, let me know which one and I’ll try to figure out what you need to do.

Ed, I’ve just done what you suggested but still it remembers my old email address. When I pressed the “Delete Auto Complete History” button it presented me with the same page that John’s instructions came up with, so I deleted everything again and then unchecked all the boxes on the Settings page. I’ve even gone back a second time and reversed the order, i.e. unchecked the boxes before deleting everything, but all to no avail.

Anyway, just wanted to mention, when you get the pop-up to delete everything (same as John suggested) leave the top most box unchecked.

 

If that doesn’t work I’ll look a bit deeper.

Something else that springs to mind is Norton Internet security. If you have this installed it might autofill your logins from its Identity Safe feature, which is configurable i.e. add or remove login and password entries.

Howard, if all else fails to clear the browser cache, you could download and try this clean up utility:

It’s called ‘CCleaner’ and I’ve used it for many years on everything from Windows 98 to Windows 7 Ultimate, with excellent results, it will even clean out Firefox when the browser’s built in ultility regularly falls over, and in fact I prefer it to clean out Firefox than let FF do the job iteslf – I’ve had fewer problems as a result.

I’ve found it’s also one of the few programmes that will clear most of the autocomplete entries on the browser address bar.

 

Good for removing stubborn software that has no removal tools too, plus cleaning out the registry of dead and redundant entries!

I tried Ed’s last suggestion but that didn’t work either. I’ll try CCleaner next, but not until later as the sun is shining and there’s work to do in the garden. Thank you both for your help and I’ll let you know how I get on with CCleaner.

Howard, it would really help if you’d come clean about which browser you are using since the password manager is a browser function and the solution is (probably) therefore dependent on which bowser you use.

 

Password info is usually stored separately (and encrypted) from such things as cookies, history etc. I don’t think any amount of cookie cleaning etc is going to help your problem. (And personally, I would avoid all third party registry, browser, cache etc cleaners …. usenet groups are full of people lamenting what they have done to their computers).

 

Browser writers have anticipated your problem. If you use Firefox, you need to open the password manager. Go to tools, options, security, saved passwords. there you will find all your login credentials for various sites and can delete the offending one.

 

If you use IE, I would guess they have something similar but I don’t use it so I can’t really help directly.

Howard, can’t fault you for enjoying the sunshine, enjoy it while it lasts!

As Sid said, knowing which browser you’re using would help us no end, also, are you using any kind of password & username software? the sort of programme similar to a digital vault that stores them separately from either Windows or browsers?

I think one variety is called ‘logmein’ or some such handle!

 

Sid, I’m no software evangelist, but software is like medication, depending upon how it is used and who is using it, some of it will kill some poople, and for some it’s a lifeline, similarly I wouldn’t tar all programmes by the same brush, as some people dick around with their pc’s when they haven’t the feintest idea what they’re doing, when in most cases if things go pearshaped, it’s a simple issue of re-installing a back-up…………..which many of those afflicted probably didn’t do!

 

I’m the first to walk away from dodgy software, and having been building and maintaining my own computers since the early 90’s on DOS and Intel 286 pc’s, I’ve seen a few applications come and go I can tell you.

CCleaner is well respected, well proven and has been around a very long time, I’ve never in all the years I’ve been using it, had an issue, and even if there was an issue, with Windows these days, it’s usually a simple matter even from safe mode, of going into ‘system restore’ and selecting an earlier restore point which will undo all changes made.

 

With CCleaner, anything done to the registry is backed up (you’re given the option to save but you would be insane to click ‘no’), and if things don’t work out, you right click on the saved file, and select ‘merge’ and it will put everything in the registry back to square one!

Hi everyone

 

Problem solved! When deleting temporary files, cookies etc, (in IE by the way) I didn’t check the box that deletes passwords. I didn’t do this because it wasn’t the password which was the problem (it was the username) and because it wasn’t checked as a default. I am very wary of altering things from the default setting but now I’ve done it the offending email address has gone and it remembers the correct one. So you were all right, it was just me not doing it thoroughly enough. I am still puzzled why I haven’t had this problem with any other sites I have to register with, but I expect it is a combination of what is remembered and when I first registered with them. I’m now thankful that I’ve installed some software called KeePass which stores all those useernames and passwords which I’ve just deleted.

 

I do find PC software daunting which is surprising since I spent the first ten years of my career programming mainframe computers in machine or assembly code. I console myself with the excuse that it’s because I know how frail software can be!

Yeah, I know John. Everyone who recommends these things swears by their particular favourite. But I’ve followed the Windows newsgroups for years and the MVP’s there swear at them. Registry cleaners (etc) are the single biggest source of problems they receive complaints about (by far) to the extent that they absolutely recommend against them. None of the regulars there (me included) would touch them with yours (so to speak).

Yeah

In any event, Howard seems to have been forced to solve this problem by deleting all his cookies and all his passwords – including any that he would actually want to retain.

There has to be a better way – and I’m sure there is – even in IE. (It’s not clear whether KeePass was installed before or after those deletions. If before, he may have been lucky – at least with the passwords if not the cookies. Nonetheless IE should have a built-in facility for deleting individual passwords, it’s kind of fundamental).

David I have just noticed (yesterday) that the little box that had a rubric “Keep me Logged in” has VANISHED. Is this a new ‘escape’ of the software? I find it most annoying

Have you accepted the terms of the "Cookies" ? If you do, you will get the prompt back … If you don't accept them, then you won't be prompted.
