Oh God, not the dreaded (and infamous) “select all squares containing …” dialogue. (How the mighty have fallen).

Can somebody tell me: if there’s a square containing just a bit of a fire-hydrant, does that count as a fire-hydrant in that square?

Hi Peter, I hate those square box selection things, nearly always have to go through three or four of the stupid things, as you say, does part of what they ask for count?

        Regards Nick.

They actually work by analysing the mouse movements whilst you select the squares (and other information held on your computer that indicates a human element), so it’s possible to not get them all correctly identified but still pass the test. A more obvious implementation of this is the ReCaptcha one where you simply tick a box saying you aren’t a robot – you’d think that it would be easy to program an automated box-ticker, but it isn’t.

Nick – I’m glad its not just me. I had one that wanted boxes with cats. One had only a tail !

Rob, that’s rather interesting. I hadn’t realised that. I’d suggest it’s perhaps a more modern implementation of the original version (which really did want you to “pick all boxes …. ” correctly.

Peter – there are people trying hard to get round these things programatically, you can find interesting conversations about it with a bit of a search, some examples here

fwiw, this started life as an empty post when I unchecked the <Notify me of follow-up replies via email> box and pressed <Submit>.

Apparently, you just have to uncheck the box – pressing <submit> not required (or desirable).

But since I’m here, thanks for that Rob. Looks interesting but don’t know why people seem to have to try to “break” everything they come across. They’re mental institution fodder to me.

Old site was becoming unstable and unsecure (broken) so had to be fixed. If left it would likely have died and all data even harder to keep plus a lot longer downtime until a new site could be sorted. So it had to be Fixed
