I have just been looking for some Loctite 603 on ebay and was surprised by two things. First was the number of out of date bottles on sale, although I must admit the stuff still seems to work fine well past the use by date, certainly for non critical jobs.

The second surprise was the number of bottles coming from China at a price that must make them rip off clones, yet ebay seems not to be bothered about this. I would have thought that the makers of genuine Loctite products would be able to stop them from being listed on ebay. As a matter of interest has anybody bought Loctite from China, it may well work fine despite being unethical.

If you want a UK made adhesive use bondloc, not nearly as well known as Loctite so it would be unlikely the Chinese would try. The price is very comparable between the two.

I –think know a bottle i bought on ebay was fake laugh. The red polythene bottle was really thin ,compared to my mates bottle , and the lid didn't fit . The writing on the bottle was all smudged too !!

However it works for my needs , and i got a much bigger bottle of the stuff than my mate … for a quarter of what he paid ! cheeky His is for professional use , he can't afford to have a failure, so he has to buy the real deal ..

I think the Hendrix CD i bought on ebay this week is fake too, but i expected it to be at 3.99 post free . Plays fine..

I too use Bondlock, with no complaints so far. It used to be available from Toolstation but not any more. I found it considerably cheaper than Loctite.

Regarding the use by date on Loctite; a company I used to work for (as Quality Manager) was a contractor to the MoD and we used various Loctite grades.

I got in touch with Loctite as we had a few bottles that were out of their use by date but had not been opened. One of their engineers told me that Loctite was useable as long as it remained liquid and the use by date was simply a requirement of the MoD but meant nothing!

The engineer said that I was welcome to send the Loctite in to them for testing and re-certification but that it would probably cost more that buying fresh supplies!

Needless to say it was disposed of in a way that meant it could not find its way back into the system. I still use some of it 20 years later!

Arontite is another brand, I have used it and liked it. Cannot find it economically now.

I use the high strength retainer off ARC. I use loads of this as all motor shift repairs and pressed loctited and also pinned. I prefer the smaller bottles as less waste in a busy shop where spillage is common and I can grab 6 or 10 bottles when I pop in as I literally do use that much

What I would like to know is why ebay does not stop this abuse. It must be obvious that fake bottles are being sold and it can't be that difficult to prevent listing. Perhaps they just don't care since they make money from each sale.

I contacted Mitutoyo about the fake verniers on sale on Ebay and they replied they cannot do anything about it. Ebay insist that you have to complain about each item that is fake, making it impractical to do anything the problem.

I thought that aiding and abetting a crime to take place, and benefiting financially from that activity, was illegal

The music copyright people are quite active, and ruthless.

Perhaps the production industry needs to fund a legal rottweiler, like the PRS to make places like Ebay sit up and notice

If you need to be protected from purchasing fake items then you need to take a long & serious look at your purchasing decision priorities.

If you can't be arsed & insist that your guv'mnt do it on your behalf then I'd ask you to be very careful about what you wish for.

Fake items entering the 'legitimate' supply chain is a real problem and vast resources are fighting it everyday. If you think they GAF about items on eBay that are magikly 50% cheaper then you probably deserve to be parted from your money.

When loctite gets really old it sets really quickly, so quickly that you can't get the bits together without it sort of stick slipping, This repeated tearing of the part cured bond means you get a weak final product. How do I now this? wheels came loose whilst being machined, so I rang Loctite. If re-doing the joint you need to get all the old stuff off. Paint stripper is the answer.

How is eBay supposed to check each and every item for sale to see if it is real or fake?? Are you willing to pay a buyer's premium to pay for the logistics and testing labs involved in that massive effort?

I have several bottles of Loctite that have been on my shelf for about 30 years. Don't know how old they were when I got them. Some 242 threadlocker ans some green retaining compound. I can't remember the number. Both kinds seem to work quite well. How is that for shelf life?
