Hi everyone. I had to secure a component on a piece of 5mm drill rod with loctite to carry out further work. In order to remove the component I had to heat it up to enable me to remove it from the shaft. However I want to get rid of the residual loctite still within the bore, I dont want take the chance of damaging the bore so is there a chemical that i might use to removed the loctite ?

          Hello Alan,

Try drilling it out using a 5 mm drill, with the drill held in a pin chuck so the the operation is done by hand

          Regards Brian

From the 638 technical data sheet :

“Cured product can be removed with a combination of soaking in a Loctite solvent and mechanical abrasion such as a wire brush.”

… It’s pretty resistant to most solvents !

              Hi Brian,

Yes i thought about this but the hole is reamed to 5mm and the component will eventually go back onto a 5mm shaft. So I am trying to maintain the reamed dimension, my thoughts are with trying to dissolve the residue out rather than mechanically remove it.

Second thought ! I wonder if "Super Glue" solvent would work ?

You might have difficulty finding chemicals to remove the cured anaerobic, so, as Brian says, you will have to use mechanical means.

You may have problems looking down a 5 mm hole to see when all has been removed. Although if the rod was 5 mm the hole is likely to be oversize by about 0.025mm so making a nat's bigger may not matter that much.

                  Rolled up Emery perhaps?

                  Howard.

                      .

What grade of Loctite did you use ?

… I only chose 638 to reference in the absence of any detail.

Using the same reamer with plenty of oil would be my first thought. It is very difficult to enlarge a hole that has already been reamed. Make a test piece first out of the same material if the original hole is critical.

Try nail varnish remover, or print head cleaner – acitone
