Has anyone got any recommendations for the above. I need to make up a gap of approx 0,3 and I've got no suitable shim – I would also like it to be permanent.

See various stuff on YouTube but nothing seems to be available in the UK

      Cheers

      Dave

Some of the metal filled epoxies by the likes of Devcon sound to be what you're after- but they won't be cheap.

I have successfully used Loctite 638 as a shim … Just be sure to coat any fasteners with a release agent if you might want to dissemble things later.

[ It has quite low ‘peel strength’ so the flat surfaces are no real problem. ]

Assuming we're talking about 0.3mm, then get a few sheets of plastic shim from cromwell.co.uk or mscdirect .co.uk.

You could get brass or steel shim stock to do the job, but the plastic works wuite well and is available in thin sheets.

Liquid shim concepts might appear to be good. but how do you tighten the parts down to them?

                    .

I know one shouldn’t … but: I assumed that Dave had [or would contrive] something which made 3-point contact, and wanted to fill the remaining gaps with his ‘liquid shim’

Garden suppliers have strips of ali about 10 x 40 x 0.5 mm. Made for greenhouse glazing, to make those little S-clips between glass sheets. Invaluable for quick shims, packing etc in the workshop.

Aluminium beer cans work well as shims and "work protectors", but don't use the stuff too near the bottom of the can, as it can be slightly thicker due to the manufacturing process (impact extrusion I think). To be sure, get the mic out!

The best bit is, you have to drink more beer.
