Whilst waiting for my new PC I’m using an ancient laptop. It keeps telling me that Mint18 is no longer supported and I should pdate it. Before I ruin everything (again) this is what it says if I use the free -h command

total       used       free       shared       buff/cache available

          Mem:           7.7G      723M      5.7G       209M          1.26         6.5G      Swap           7.9G       0B          7.9G

The HD is partitioned with W10, I intend to get rid of that as it hasn’t been updated since Noah launched the Ark, and updating W10 on my old PC broke it. I think the ay to go is to do a new install of whatever the latest version of Mint is. Am I wrong? Wouldn’t be surprised, its all double Dutch to me.

I’ve failed dismally to insert an image, if I click on the little mountain icon I am invited to drag and drop a picture, but when I do it closes down the forum page

wplink is part of the Wifi system.  As it’s the sort of problem fixed by upgrading, and you  don’t care what’s on the laptop already, I’d go for a new full install.

Download the mint iso and instal it as per their instructions.  It should offer a ‘Use Entire Disc’ option.  Select that and Windows will be overwritten and mint will take the entire disc.

Don’t worry about free , it looks OK.  8Gb RAM is a bit low by today’s standards, but not insanely so.

If its any consolation Duncan I’ve just installed Linux Mint on a laptop using a bootable USB stick more or less following the instructions linked to in Journeymans post.

Laptop is a Lenova Yoga 510 (Radion A6) from 2018, I have put in an SSD and initial impressions are that it performs well. Installation took less than 30 mins.

I had installed Mint on a mini PC w/Atom 1.8GHz but have now given up with it because as Dave and other have said Mint is too much for its ancient bones.
