having just bought a boiler and rolling chassis from a club member,i presented the boiler to our inspector for a scrutiny, evrything was looking fine until we noticed that there was no way to get water into the boiler,so out came the drawings, the boiler had been made as per the drawings, but there were no bushes marked for feedwater clacks, after looking through ivy halls words and music,we found a drawings of the backhead, and lo and behold there was a clack on the right hand side of the backhead(but nothing on the drawings)this is supposed to be a top feed loco but nothing on the drawings as to the position of them or any dimensions at all,the backhead bush is not a problem, but how do i get over the problem of the top feed?your comments and indeed solutions are badly needed.also as this loco design is so old(and i suspect this mistake has been noted and brought to the attention of the plan suppliers}why have the drawings never been ammended, and reading through various forums that i visit, this is a recuring problem on a lot of designs, the publishers are told ,but never do nothing about it,are they just happy to take our money, let us make expensive and time consuming mistakes(even after they have been told about them} anyway rant over and please help with my problem.

            Hi There
Problems can be posted on this website for all to see.
I won’t get the drawings altered as we have had various complaints about errors which were incorrect.

            regards David

              John,

The backhead clack is for the tender handpump feed. The
boiler does have two topfeeds but they were meant to be fitted without
bushes, hence the lack of them. The idea is to drill two 1/4″ holes in
the boiler barrel either side of the safety valve bush. The top feeds
are fitted into these holes and secured to the barrel with bronze
screws and run over with soft solder to seal. I doubt if this would be
acceptable now but I don’t think it would be too difficult to retrofit
a couple of bushes as the only joint you are liable to disturb is the
safety valve bush. Would be a doddle if you know someone with
oxy-acetylene gear. That’s assuming the stays haven’t been soft
soldered. Would still be possible with oxy-acetylene to keep the heat
local and a bit of care.

Ivy Hall was never intended to be a
replica of a real Hall but instead LBSC’s idea of what a ‘modernised’
Hall might look like. Lickham Hall was the closer to scale design that
he did for Reeves, much to the annoyance of the head of Model Engineer
              at the time!

                Hi There
Errors were incorrect, that is why the drawings won’t be altered.
                regards David
