I'm getting fed up with taking it on the chin and binning them with a C'est la vie approach.

Don't know what that means but binning them and getting on with life works for me.

I value what's left of my life highly and do not squander it on fighting to get my money back after 2 years.

Presumably, the claimed life of 25,000 hours is based on switch on once and continuous use.

Unless my maths is adrift, this equates to 2.86 years continuous use.

Despite numerous start ups, most of ours have survived for longer than that.

The two on the mill, and the one over the fitting vice, get switched on and off quite frequently, but are only used for relatively short periods.

And filament lamps used to quote a 1,000 hour life, shortened by the current surge when switched on each time.

I extended the life of the halogen lamp on the lathe, considerably, by improving the ventilation of the housing.

My wife wanted a bright white light for the home office. Amazon had some 24W fluorescent spiral lamps so I bought a pack. Quite compact for the output and a nice bright cool white. From previous experience they should outlast any of the LED’s I’ve bought recently. Only downside is they do take a few minutes to reach full brightness but it’s a non issue for us in this application.

Thanks for the very interesting posts. I am virtually all LED now but what a huge box of spare bulbs I now have. Four different bases, I don't know how many shapes and all the different wattages (let alone Lumens and temperature!) Life used to be so much simpler. I've just had my latest communication from Octopus (I was switched from Avro) and was staggered to find that Electric supplied KWhrs are now FIVE times the cost of Gas supplied ones. I'm so glad that I've converted to LEDs notwithstanding all the hassle.

            FIVE!!

If I had confidence that was going to remain I would be running for a gas boiler and loose any ambition I had for electric heating, (heat pump of otherwise.)

My strategy that carbon energy will become expensive relative to wind power is proving true, unfortunately the way we are charged reflects an inflated market rate due to lack of gas. So daft.

No – it is the anticipated period of operation to reach 70 (or 50) % of the original light output in lumens, apparently.

The packaging should give an indication of the deterioration percentage used for the claim with "L70" or L50".

              CFLs were similarly rated.

I have ended up changing the high bay workshop lights at work after a couple of years use while they were still functional, but when the light output dropped to "too dim to be useful". This applies equally to CFL or Led units, but the CFLs work out cheaper to change & the wattage isn't much lower for the Leds to save the extra upfront cost.
