          Hi Chris,

Sumitomo or Glanze indexable tool holders are good. Arc has Sumitomo with 10mm shank. Chronos stocks Glanze.

I buy from Arc Euro, fewer duds! A non-obvious reason perhaps, is the limited range of inserts Arc stock are a good match to hobby requirements. ebay, and other suppliers, often carry a much larger range useful to professionals, but are liable to disappoint a beginner who can't use them properly. Hobby kit is rarely powerful, fast and rigid enough to get the best out of carbide in full metal munching mode. Production machine tools are considerably more powerful, rigid, and faster than ours.)

Talking of improperly using inserts, the non-ferrous type sold by Arc Euro work well on steel at hobby machine RPM. It's to do with their shape and sharpness.

Agreed. They are particularly good for small diameter work.

Another source of indexable tools, and tips, is J B Cutting Tools.

I have bought big names at a fraction of their list prices on ebay, and also Chinese ones which are very good for hobby use. As already mentioned, APT are a great firm and they are competitive and fast delivering, their tools start from 16mm square shanks upwards. Some of the inserts they sell are aimed at hobbyists and available in smaller quantities than the normal boxes of ten. The advantage of this is that you can try out a variety and not be stuck with 9 unsuitable ones if a bad choice is made.APT also sell threading inserts singly which is handy if you want several types. ARC is another good bet and Cutwel for special tools which are hard to get

A typo, I think. They certainly sell 6mm and up square shanks for CCMT style inserts.
