The tool holders are fine for hobby use, you may want to use a better spec insert depending on what you are cutting and the size of your machine.

If its a small machine you should be able to get good results from HSS as well

I've got a couple of Glanze boring bars. The bars are fine, and I tend to run my tooling fairly hard, but the supplied inserts went straight into the bin and were replaced with branded inserts. I can't comment on other Glanze tool holders.

One word of caution when buying tool holders; make sure that the inserts are widely available. Some insert tooling sold within the ME environment uses inserts that are not widely available, other than from the outlet that sold the tooling in the first place.

            Regards,

            Andrew

And try not to loose the tiny allen screw that holds the tip in the bar,You will have to move heaven and earth to get any of those,

Or just order from the bottom of this page, I did buy a couple of spares but in the 4 years or so since I started using them have not lost one.

I can only echo what's been said. The holders are very good. The tips, I've found, are brittle and maybe not as sharp as they could be. I replaced all mine with Sumitomo and Sandvik tips.

                    Hi Mike,

I have Glanze tools and find the holders OK for my use. As others have said here, buy quality carbide tips.

I concur with the fact that the holders are fine, but the tips are basically useless.

The pity is that a newcomer might buy the Glanze set and be put off tipped tooling forever.

                        Thanks for all the input.

I did try a Sumitomo tool and tip some time ago and found it was very good, so may well settle for those. Seems to be a lack of suppliers in UK, but I do have a good friend in Japan who could cut out the middle man. I will have to email him re prices..

                        Mike.

I have found that **LINK** supply a good range of tips, not just different sizes but different grades for different materials, this can make one heck of a difference!

Ebay used to be very good for buying quality tips at a very good price, but I have noticed there are fewer bargains now. You also have to be very careful about tip size and tip radius to get what you need. I also have a few Glanze tools and they perform very well and are a lot cheaper than top brand names. It should also be said that tool holders are very easy to make yourself from decent quality steel and the torx screws are not that difficult to source.

Interesting thread – I have recently started and bought a sets of Glanze turning, threading/profiling/parting tools (cost a fair bit!) and was getting a bit disillusioned about how easy it is to chip or blunt the tips so the link to alternatives is worth investigating for me – but I also bought some tool steel blanks from Tracy Tools and after a bit of practice grinding them was surprised how good the finish was compared to the Glanze tips (but you have all known this for years!)

My lathe is pretty small (8.5 * 16) compared to some I guess

Hello Everyone, I have two 8mm square Glanze tools(CCMT060204 insert) that fit nicely in the ML7 4 way toolpost.

Can anyone give me a part number for alternate carbide tips for general purpose turning.

I'm befuddled with all the types available, in as much, will they fit?

The tools are Part No. SCLCR 0808 D06 & SCLCL ditto.

                                Regards, Bear..
