Some of you may know of my interest in lathe gearboxes and the aim of creating working tables for the more obscure threads.

I am now seeking information from owner(s) of Smart & Brown lathes with gearboxes. The imperial design with 19 tpi available is subtly different from the Southbend version from which they were copied.

I would like to clarify the following please

        1. Was there ever a Metric version gearbox?

        2. If so, a picture of the front plate showing the selections and the associated gearing tables would be helpful

        3. Gearing tables for the Imperial box would also be helpful.

        Thank you

        Regards Brian

Thank you to all 303 of you who have read this thread, sadly no-one has been able yet to help in my research with a reply.

Surely there is someone on the Forum thus equipped and able to help?

          Kind regards Brian

I've just returned after a long weekend away.

Thank you Frank for the advice; excellent as it is Tony's informative website doesn't go into the sort of detail I am looking for and I really need the knowledge of an owner to answer the questions I have. So I am back to the generosity of someone to spare the little time I will be taking up.

              Kind regards

              Brian

                Brian,

Just re read the post and don't see a mention but there is also a group over on Yahoo for these lathes and there is a fair bit in their file section.

My apologies if you know this and have been there.

                  Hello John,

Thank you for that information, I was going to try there next.

I enjoyed your postings from China BTW, they are making serious inroads into quality work now and it would be a big mistake I think to assume that everything emanating from China should be wieghed in as scrap.

                  Kind regards Brian

                    Hi Brian,

Only just seen this thread. I have a Smart and Brown lathe and as you state it does have 19 tpi on the gear box. Whether there was ever a metric version I cannot say however with a set of change wheels one of which is a 127 T then metric pitches from 0.2 mm to 5.0mm can be cut. When I bought the lathe many years ago I was fortunate to get an original screw cutting chart that lists the metric pitches and also B.A and diametrical pitches available when you have a full set of change gears. If you want more info let me have an email address and I will send photo's.

                      Hello Max'

Thanks for your reply, it would be very useful indeed to share your information. I didn't expect a metric gearbox, but since the lathe was cloned from South Bend, who did make gearboxes in either language, it seemed a fair question.

Photos and info would be very much appreciated.
