Very old Brook motor DOL starter with fitted overload set at around 6 A.
Picture of motor plate or terminal box connections needed.

                Paul

The part with connections L1,L2,L3 and motor outgoing conductors A,B,C

The picture showing the switch fuse is self explanatory, it does need a good clean out of all the debris though.

You don't show any start/stop buttons only an on/off selector switch which could be an isolator, perhaps the start/stop controls are on the saddle handles ?

be care with that switch fuse, that type may well have asbestos cloth behind the fuse carriers, don't pull the fuses out close the box isolate the feed to the box cut the conduit either side of the switch fuse double bag in plastic and take to your local recycling centre. Check if they take asbestos first.

Three phase isolator switch looks like a Bill fused 3phase Isolator Switch , , which looking at its age i would think this has the old conduit thread nuts ,that if cut and removed will not match up with todays metric conduit but is possible to change and update with care? You starter contactor i am puzzled why there are two leads on terminal 1 2 3 . The terminals A B C going to the motor , The contactor has overload protection and as a Brook one matches the motor has this got push button controls , This i feel sure will have a 3 phase coil 24 volt did not exist that far back.

Your Isolator must be supplied from a 3 Phase Distribution board .

More PIcs may provide a answer

Thanks to everyone for there helpful comments and advice but a lot of it is going straight over my head, There is pretty much nothing I cannot do with an engine/gearbox/ axles etc but I think this lathe is going to beat me because of the electrical problem.

All I know is the motor spins freely by hand, the chuck spins freely with the belt on and off, the gearbox all seems to engage/ dissengage in every possible ratio configuration, and having taken the lid off all the gears look in tip top condition.
