Looks kind of similar to my BEC lathe. Have you had a close look for a stamp at the tailstock end of the front slideway on the bed, just behind the V ,on the upper surface. Mine was very faint.

I'm begining to think my BEC lathe is an IXL with some modifications. Maybe by BEC and the BEC stamp is just an inventory mark. The main castings , almost identical to yours but a flat way at the back, mine just the front V . and the gearbox side rib is more inset in mine . Probably just small eveloutionary changes. Great to come across your post now, I hadn't seen this post and my research hadn't picked up IXL so im very happy to discover something new about  its design origins.

Hi Michael, interesting link, thank you, if you look at the last picture the makers gear selection for screw cutting info plate, shows that this lathe has a very wide range of threads! Even down to 2 tpi! Has anyone ever cut a thread with this sized lathe? Myford is listed at 8 tpi! By comparisons. One thing I Noticed with this featured lathe in the pics is how similar it is the the Atlas, even the castings…. Who copied who I don't know…

My question is has anyone seen a helical vee groove put on the exterior of a shaft possibly by a lathe? The one I saw perhaps 6 inches long which made about a 14 of a turn of the bar… It was not milled but a single point tool…is it possible?

            Thanks,

            Vic

For very coarse pitch threads, to avoid strain on the geartrain, some advise rotating the leadscrew rather than powereing the chuck, (In that way you are awar of the forces involved). And driving the chuck, which is less heavily loaded than the Leadscrew.

The coarsest thread that I have ever cut under power is 4 mm pitch, (With a 3 mm pitch Leadscrew ) which I did using back gear to keep the speed low..

Hi Howard, thanks for your interesting reply, perhaps 2 tpi is a bit ambitious for this lathe! Despite what the badge says ,I did 6' tpi on the Atlas, which was a strain, causing subsequent motor problems…!
