What's frustrating is that I was unable to use kit that woulds have suppressed some atmospheric distortion, which has 'stretched' Jupiter a bit, at least in the red and green images combined for this result.

Say Neil, I've looked all over my railway maps and I just can't find this "Conn Junction" everybody's talking about.

        Oh wait ……….smiley

Despite the awful cloud, I have managed to get a few images over the last couple of months:

              Flaming Star Nebula

Amazing. I never knew of the Monkey Head nebula, but had seen pictures of the pillars inside it for I don't know how long. Is it visible as such to plain eyesight in – say – a 6" reflector?

This one was actually from the beginning of June:

                                  Sadr Region Nebula

My first taken using a camera lens with my astro camera, to get a wider field. It was a Zeiss Sonnar 135 f/3.5.

And from last night. Look carefully, and you can see the 'North Polar Hexagon', it's quite good going to show this using a 6" telescope.

Provided the camera is reasonably capable, the most important requirement is holding it steady!

The other problem is blur due to the earth spinning, causing the heavens to rotate across the sky. To minimise that, an astronomical mount is needed, the best ones being motorised to track the object.

For night sky photography with standard camera lenses Pentax cameras use “Astrtracer” that moves the sensor.

My new workshop is making progress, and I'm itching to get back to metalworking. In the meantime astrophotography is a bit of a lifeline.

Saturn and Jupiter from two nights ago. Photographing them each year has become something of a ritual, with the quest to achieve something a bit crisper and more detailed. I think beyond this I need to go for a bigger scope.

It's a very clever so0lution, although it obviously has limits, not least the need to re-frame after each shot if you want to stack multiple exposures.
