……remember that laser centre-finder you've always wanted? One way to give otherwise land-filling waste a second purposeful life.

However, don't mess with this if you're a blithering idiot; an operating laser is DANGEROUS and will be permanently wreck your eyes (or worse, someone else's!) if you don't observe ALL safety precautions.

I endorse your safety warning Andre … BUT the idea of using this as a centre-finder is frankly ludicrous.

The wavelength is not only risky, but is visually inefficient

… which, in my opinion, makes it a lose-lose

Another bit of youtoube nonsense. And yhey are getting money from Altium. Apart from the danger the LASER diode won't last long with just a resistor. They need active current control with optical feedback. There is a dpotodide built into the package to provide that feedback. The PCB he ripped off it probably had the required driver IC and other coponents on it. Yet another of bodging over engineering and a little knowledge being dangerous.

This is the great danger of you tube videos, you don’t know the provenance of the presenter, I have seen machining videos that are downright dangerous. In the good old days you went to college and were taught by a professional, nowadays anyone with a mobile phone can claim to be an expert.

laser devices usable as center finders can be had from hundreds of sources for next to nothing.

YouTube needs to be treated with much caution, just look at all the FREE ENERGY devices touted on the platform and the numpties that believe the crap.

There is plenty of good stuff on YouTube, one just has to be selective.

I have a small key-ring size laser pointer, a works souvenir, PP presentations for the use of. At only about 12mm diameter X 50mm long I have pondered its centre-finding potential but I think I'd feel safer adapting a small l.e.d head-torch with a focussing lens.

Meanwhile I've no problems using wigglers, wobblers, locating pegs….
