We have some 8″ dia cast iron bar ends in the skip at work.

The offcuts range from about 1″ to 4″ long.

Any suggestions as to what I could use them for?

I may be able to get as many as 20 of these!

My “come in useful one day pile” is getting big!

If it is free then don’t just limit youself to round items it can be cut into blocks and flat plate. If you make models than think cylinders, sole & Bed plates, crankcases or just about any part of a model that would have been cast.

If you can’t think of anything I’ll give you £1 each😀

I’ll raise that to £2 each

An 8″ round can turn into a 6″ square or something I’d guess? A 6x6x4 block can fit many things in it

                          Thank you for the replies.

Lapping plates could come in useful and is something I’d not thought of!

Selling is an option, I know the grade and even have material cert (for all they are worth), but this is a gem I’m unlikely to find again (the job is being made from castings in the future).

I’ve got plenty of smaller cast iron, hence asking for ideas for a “big” bit!

Tooling plates for a mill come to mind as well.

Iron pulleys make for a lovely smooth transmission on belt drive machines..

..a bit of flywheel effect never goes amiss in some machines if you can find somewhere to include the ‘mass’..

..a great material for making a base to mount a toolpost straight to the cross-slide..

I’d also have a look through Hemingway’s ‘Work Holding and Positioning’ section, lots of stuff there, if it suits the work you do, I guess..

                              ..or what about..

..a tilting table / compound angle base..?

                              ..a couple of big ‘squares’ / cubes / cylinders / angle- & vee blocks..(45 & 60/30?

                              ..heavy vice base/workholding table for a drill-press..

Locomotive wheels, cut the bar into squares and turn to suitable diameter.  Definitely worth keeping in stock for the future, just in case I need it.
