Knobs and Toothpaste Caps

Hi there,

In the interests of recycling as much as possible does anyone know if British Standards have ventured into toothpaste tube threads. There are some very smart caps on toothpaste tubes and even bigger and better ones in the "Beauty Box" in the bathroom just waiting to be revitalised.
The threads seem to be based on a buttress profile but are they standardised and do any suitable taps and dies exist to make collets to fit them to 1/4" or 6mm shafts?
Just spotted a nice big knurled one on a tube of Polyfilla.

Many products these days have screw-on caps which can be used as knobs on homemade equipment – just take a stroll down the household cleaning or bathroom aisles in a supermarket and make your choice.

Perhaps the most useful are the caps off marker pens which can be pushed onto suitably turned spigots.

I use two flip top tooth paste caps on the oil hole on the head stock of my lathe, these replace two little rubber bungs for the filler holes for themain bearings. Made a little stem to fit in the 10 mm hole, with a tight fitting buttress type thread to take the cap. Ian S C
