hi guys can anyone help with info on my kerry drill, i need to know the spring size for returning the spindle and possibly how it fits in . on mine the previous owner took it out and rigged a makeshift spring arrangement

Hi John,

I had a floor standing version of that drill until recently, I wish I'd not sold it as it was a fine machine.

The back gear gives a great speed range. I have some paperwork and drawings for it which I can dig out later, see if it mentions the quill spring.

I'm part way through building a 1/4 scale scratch built model of it so on currently using pocket watch springs for the quill return.

thats amazing mick, i,m not up to that standard yet . i have a manual from toneys lathes , but can,t see how its constructed

Hi John,

I have a Mk1 but I have never had the guts to remove the spring cover. The old adage "don't fix what ain't broke" and the thought of that spring laying in wait like a coiled viper put me off. If you have any details of how to adjust it I don't mind taking it apart, it is well over due for a spring clean, sorry I could just not resit that one.

Mine came without a spring. Guess someone took it out to get a replacement and never did.

I ordered a spring on ebay. Works fine.

Don`t remember the size as it is ten years ago.

The spring goes into the slot,you wind it up by turning the lid with two hands and secure it with your third hand when it`s thight.

I have a Kerry Super drill which I bought and renovated about 20 years ago. It was in a pretty neglected state, but cleaned up well and I would never part with it. There is a photo in my album, but unfortunately it doesn’t show the side with the return spring housing. When I got the machine the original return spring cover was missing, but fortunately the clock-type spring was still there. I turned up a new cover out of ally, and it’s been fine ever since. The inner of the spring fits into the slotted end of the quill operating spindle, and the outer end fits into a slot in the cover. The cover is a shallow “cup” which the spring sits in, rather like the barrel of a clock. To tension the spring the cover is rotated in its housing in the drill casting, then locked with a grub screw. No drama taking it apart. Just release the grub screw while holding the cover and release the tension. The cover can then be pulled off complete with the internal spring.

with mine someone has made an aluminium pully and rigged up a spring on a wire cable . so i,m hoping to sling that out and make what it should have

thanks mike thats good info , i think the spindle pinion on mine has been change with new teeth cut because the end where the spring fits comes out further to take a pully, i like the kerry you have mike very nice
