      1. Hello,

My wife’s mini music system JVC stopped working,  I used the tester and found that the plug is at fault.  The electric wire is two core but has a sealed three pin plug, the instructions state that the system has a earth that its class 2 double insulated, its been designed in such away that it doesn’t require a safety connection to a electrical earth.

If I just change the plug will this be safe to use ?

I have checked the fuse but there’s no connection from live to neutral so it seems to me that the sealed plug is at fault.
      <p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks Bob n</p>

Hi Bob, it could be that there is a fracture in the flex itself, which does happen at times, just outside the plug or where it enters the music system. If it does have only a two core flex, then it should be a double insulated system and a connection to the earth pin won’t be required. Replacing the plug should be OK.

        Regards Nick.

Thanks Nick, I shall try a new plug later today and will let you know.

Hi Bob. Unusual for sealed plugs to fail on low power items, could be an internal fuse.

              Bob,

Alan Mellor says above, specifically there may be small glass fuse on the power section.

You need the check there’s voltage or not where the lead joins the board.

With a modern switch-mode power supply you will not get continuity or resistance between live and neutral with a multimeter like you do with a older transformer based unit. More investigation is required. It is very unsual for a mould plug to fail on an item that does not have regular movement of the flex.

                Robert.

One of the things that happens with aged electronics is that electrolytic capacitors degrade and eventually fail. This can cause internal fuses to blow. If you have the cover off to check for continuity from the plug to the internal board and for any internal fuses, check the top of electrolytic capacitors. Sometimes a blown one will have an obviously distorted top where internal pressure has domed it.
