My elderly 540 has decided to start leaking from its wheel head.

It’s the plain bearing, uses super thin oil model.
Does anyone have the spec of the seals, or a lead on where to buy them?

Andmar suggested a seal place, but the info in the parts manual is apparently not sufficient.

If you can get the spec then it should be easy ! What info do you have ? Noel.

All I have is a photo of the parts manual, which has a very general description:

            540whellhead2.jpg

Of course the part numbers are no use unless you can get them from the apparently defunct J&S.

Given the cost of the wheel head oil Id rather not run a total loss system…

If you can measure the diamiter of the inside and outside diamiter and the length of the seals checking the actual size of the shaft and hole size that they fit into as well as which way they are fitted you should be able to go to any reputable supplier for a replacement. They should have a code number moulded on the side as well. I always take pictures as i disemble any thing like this just in case.

To stop the leak you are going to have to pull it apart anyway. So might as well pop the old seals out, measure up the shaft size, seal OD and thickness and get a modern seal to fit. Luckily being flexible, you can often get modern metric seals that will fit old imperial size shafts. Also some old imperial sizes are still available. And other old Brit machinery used metric bearings and seals since way back anyway. Only way to find out for sure is to get to fondling its innards.

Yes indeed. I was hoping to get the seals before having to strip the machine.
Currently I’m in the middle of a project where the grinder is the best machine for the job. Id rather not have it out of action for a long time while stripping and then procuring seals.

Still if no one knows then I guess that’s how it’ll go.

Well if you have trouble getting new seals you can use a trick some Russian friends taught me. Take the garter spring out of the seal and cut some out of it and hook the ends together again and reinstall it. Tightens that seal right up.

                      Hi,

could you email a copy of the parts book, i particularly need the wheelhead schematic that you have pictured but is a bit too small for me to see the detail

                      many thanks ib advance
