Hi all. I have the option to buy a jig borer made by G.E.Hibbert of Leicester with the name shaftesbury cast into the column. I believe it will handle light milling work too. It has a 30 int taper and variable speed. Anyone have any information on said machine or knowledge of Hibbert products. There is nothing on lathes site so I’m a bit in the dark. T

Not one I have come across. A 30 int taper to ER collet chuck would make sense. Plenty of 30 int stuff around.

Hi Chris, thanks for the comment. I hoped it would replace my raglan vertical mill which is morse 2 spindle bore. It looks a very robust machine and I’m surprised I can’t find any trace of Hibbert or the shaftesbury name. I have decided to buy it regardless and see how things go. The variable speed mechanism is very similar to the raglan moving pulley set up. Smooth and quick to change speeds. I am looking at rota grip for 30 int taper mandrels and there are plenty about as you say. Regards T

Hi, T I hope the purchase goes well for you. Not knowing the machine one concern may be high enough spindle speeds for small milling cutters, maybe overcome with a digital inverter to speed things up. Possible cheaper options than Rota grip around, try WMT or is it WNT ? I have a friend retiring soon who may have some 30int stuff to dispose of.

Well I bought it had it delivered and stripped it for cleaning. It’s in good nick and the spindle bearings are sound. The variable speed works flawlessly and gives 445 to 2400 rpm .
I have cleaned all the head and rotary elements and the table is next on the agenda. Need some 30 int tooling now. Thinking about an ER 32 collet chuck, boring head and a morse 1 socket for all my taper shank drills. Any thoughts.

ER32 collet chucks are very handy and the collets can be used in other chucks/fixtures. I have chucks for both my Lathe and Mill and collet blocks etc.

Let's see some pictures of your machine when you get a minute!

                      .

I have a int 30 Clarkson collet chuck going spare that I would not want a lot of coins for.

                        Hi TM

Sounds like you have an interesting machine? I could not find a reference to it on the Lathes.co site.

Can you post a picture or two?

                        Regards
                        John

There is a strong resemblance to the Downham/Elliot Jig borers

Yes, apart from the colour it does look pretty similar.
