Almost there.. some success at last – had it running for a good minute although that took a second flame to achieve. When i showed it a safe extra from a blowlamp it accelerated very well. It would have kept running with that extra heat.

This is due to a combination of a temporary power cylinder from brass tube with a PB piston ( the carbon attempt was too much difference in coeff expansion), upgrading the o-rings and resealing the junctions with silicone. I have identified one junction that doesn't sit right by more than the thickness of copy paper..and I don't really know why.. no burs, all looks flat etc. I'm guessing since it's one face of the cool cylinder it may be the drill holes that deep wandered ever so slightly…perhaps i'll open then up a bit more for wiggle room.

So I want to make another piston for a marginally tighter fit by, say a micron and follow Brian's approach with some gaskets.

I'm confident that if the syringe glass is consistent enough on it's bore that a glass power cylinder and carbon piston will improve it further. My 10's and 20's are on order from china so may take a while yet.

I learned something (again) today.. with even more careful inspection there were indeed some tiny burs left.. so lots more attention to detail and then lapping the faces against each other with brasso. I still have the gaskets to make before re-assembly and see if i can squeeze a slightly bigger piston in there without it sticking…watch this space……..

So yesterday's attention to detail plus some paper gaskets – just printer paper using a ball ended tool and dirty finger and scissors technique and it's running well with the brass power cylinder and PB piston. I didn't end up making a new one

I've had it running for over an hour but it is susceptible to drafts and height of holder. I'm sure a candle shroud with vents would concentrate the heat better. I'm not sure 'll bother with glass cylinders now or painting it..it was always about following a drawing and getting something to work.. that will doubtless gather dust in a cupboard

Time to clean up my mess. recalibrate and clean lathe and mill thoroughly and think about then next project (i know what it's going to be just need to gather supplies and skill)

pgk pgk, well done, I'd have been most surprised if you did not get it going, it's just the tiny details at the end, but once the wheels start turning, and keep on turning, it give you a good feeling, it doesn't stop, your twentieth one will feel the same, or even better.

Thanks for your support.. Ian and everyone else.

I suprised myself by finding out how good it felt to have it running ..even OH found it cute. But i don't see myself building a whole bunch of 'useless' shelf objet. Now if you could find me some plans to build a stirling pump to irrigate 1/4 acre from the stream….wood-fired of course.. like those antique american jobies and how to build it from scrap **LINK** then I could see some benefit

Next I need to learn/practice/source silver soldering and boiler making…..

Perhaps you want an antique British one instead. This Robinson arrived in NZ from Australia the day before this photo was taken 2 years ago, last year it ran with a water pump. One of my motors on the little table to the right of the flywheel, the Ross Yoke motor and power hacksaw.

…iust pop it round to Brian's bedroom and make sure it works in summer first…

Is there a plan/scale cross section of a Robinson anywhere on the net?

The Robinson in the photo has a 10" bore, weighs something horrendous, and produces 1/3rd of a horse power at about 120rpm, the first run was on fire wood bought at the petrol station at some inflated price.
