James Maiwald Flame Licker / Flame Gulper doing some work

This is the first time I have seen a James Maiwald Flame Licker / Flame Gulper doing some work. I made an aluminum drive pulley and mounted it on the flywheel and the engine quite happily drove a Fleischmann wood saw steam accessory.

Not a lot of work? The saw would need to be rotating somewhat faster to do any useful cutting , even on that scale?

How much work do you estimate? 1/2 Watt?

I’d like to see it cutting a small piece of balsa.

Well its never going to be able to "work under any load" is it? Its Flame Licker engine!

For a flame licker, running that saw is impressive, whether your impressed or not.

Totally agree Jim, the mere fact its driving that belt and overcoming the friction of the saw is work done in itself.

My post was in jest – I didn't really think it would drive the saw blade fast, let alone cut something!

A stirling engine would be more efficient?

I think most (all?) small stirling's would suffer from extremely low torque though from memory they are one of the most efficient engines?

Agreed, just running that saw is impressive enough. I have enough trouble just getting mine started!

Here is one of my flame gulpers with a brake on it, the weight is 1 oz, sorry no video, belted up to a small electric motor as a generator it will power a small transistor radio.

Here's the brake arm broken down. The weight hanger is .5 oz. The shims between the brake and the drum are cut from the plastic piston ring from a car shock absorber (I cut those open for the steel, and ready made cylinders for my hot air motors).
