I,m sure we all have these projects in the long term planning. Lots never happen, but some of the interest is in the long term thought and planning.

A long term interest in steam boats, impending retirement, recent shed rebuild etc just might make doing something more likely.

I have booked myself a taster day later in the year with the SBA and will also ask my question on their site, but this one is more active and there is obviously the knowledge base here!

Obviously an expensive hobby and very time consuming to build a full hull as well as steam plant. I do have the skills to tackle it ….but do I have the time?

I do have an old Enterprise hull, and considered using this. Not sure it has the displacement for all the plant to leave a useful passenger margin.

I squirreled this picture away some time in the past….not sure of it’s origin…..but a steam outboard is a fun idea.

i have a couple of old British Seagull outboards who might offer up the ‘leg’ and prop. Some Stuart Turner Castings might work? But the boiler is beyond my experience. Realising that it needs certification etc so not likely a job for me…..does anyone have any wisdom on what is in the picture?

I have mill / lathe etc.

      Thoughts welcome!

Strikes me it would be better to lay the engine down so the crankshaft can run straight down to the bevel gears on the prop shaft. Having a second set of bevels at the top will complicate things and use up power.

The engine looks a bit of  afree lance, have a look at the designs of Ray Hasbrouck though his tend to have a smaller trunk guide and longer columns.

I presume it’s just another instance of that Bug I reported a while ago.

I can’t even see the little icon that usually comes up when an image goes missing. Possibly a link that did not work, Steam canoe thread maybe?

The Bug relates to embedding TouTube videos, not images

… several examples in my posts, and in Vic’s

I have no idea whether it is attributable to the operating system of the poster, or that of the viewer … but an embedded video gets overlaid with opaque white.

Edit: __ My report was acknowledged by eMail on 10-May-2024, but I have heard nothing since then.

If the ghost link doesn’t work, try the following:-

thesteamboatingforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2458  and then prefix by https://

Thank you for the link. Interesting reading. It seems to stop about a year ago part way through ‘the story’.

Same here for the bug reports I put in, deafening silence after the acknowledgement.

The OP to this topic put ‘It will never happen’ in his title, pretty much applies to Mortons finishing this website to any sort of reasonable standard.

It’s abit difficult to get an idea of scale from that photo, but I would guess at a 6″ to 8″ barrel for the boiler.  That would suggest one of the vertical boilers by Tubal Cain (Tom Walshaw) for the smaller size.   Maybe the 3″ Scale Atkinson standard steam lorry boiler is a little bigger but I don’ have the drawings by me just now.

They would be my starting point.  Remember you need a comfortably big boiler for marine work.

I seem to remember an outboard in the Steam Boating Magazine 20 years ago where the constructor was using flash steam – in some ways simpler than a conventional boiler.

Have a look here for a steam boat outboard competition – lots of fun
