It is not distasteful, it is a fact of life.
War is bad for everyone but it will keep happening.

Any engineering subject is suitable for Model Engineer (and Workshops&rsquo if it informative and useful to the readers.

With reference to Club News and all the snowflakes out there:

And finally, feed donkey meat to children, two birds killed with one stone!

No more starving children and no more donkeys!

I have to say that I am with those people such as Hollowpoint and Howi above. In fact I would go further and say to those people who want to shut down topics they don't agree with, "Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot read or discuss – I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions in this respect."

In fact, although I have not read the particular thread to any great depth, I did find some comments about rifling to be of interest.

Tomato plants, financial surnames, philosophical maxims (whatever they are). The first has no interest for me, yet I was surprised somewhat all the different varieties so maybe I have learned something. The second, was just for fun, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. The third, well, I can't remember reading it, and doubt if I would understand anyway.

But, may I say that from what br has said, or rather what his good lady has said on his behalf, he is confined to a wheelchair and possibly physically helpless as well, yet his brain appears to be functioning satisfactorily. Now, I can't imagine being in that situation myself, or rather, I would find it extremely frustrating to be dependant on my wife as br appears to be. May I therefore request that we cut br a lot of slack, and accept that this may be the only way that he can prevent himself sinking into that dark pit of despair. I don't care if the topics he introduces are only vaguely engineering related – it's more important that we assist him to keep his spirits up.

        Cheers,

        Peter G. Shaw

Freedom isn't about allowing the people you like, it's about allowing the people you don't like

The USA still has the best practical objective system with its constitution, our own system relies too heavily upon the whims and trendiness of the political classes

Further to my post above, I have now read br's thread about Philosophical maxims – and cracked out laughing.

Thankyou br, just what we need these days,

I'd say the thread has more place on this forum that the choice of tomato plant, financial surnames or Philosophical maxims

So yet again you pick on me and mention two of my threads

Other members have noticed this and sent me messages to say so . Read the PM's if you want proof.

So please just delete my threads if you do not approve and kindly stop knocking me

                bill

PS < As stated above in another post. f the content is not of interest to you, or you find it "distasteful", then don't read it or get involved – that the thread has run to 3 pages suggests that others do find it interesting.

So on that basis, the financial names thread was of interest to others – enough said.

I think you are being unnecessarily sensitive, Jason was using the posts to illustrate a point rather than, I quote "picking on me".

Other members are interested in firearms and associated paraphernalia and one must understand weapons of all types are harmless, it is the application of the weapon which can be harmful. Twice in the last Century without weaponry this nation would have lost the freedoms we now all take for granted.

I'm not at all political and like most people am horrified and saddened by what's happening in Ukraine, I did proudly take part in the Flashmob Orchestra that played in Trafalgar Square on Sunday, which I think is the only remotely political thing I've ever done. So I think it's safe to say I'm very anti the current war.

But I have no problem with any of the subjects that have been raised by members of the forum, I didn't read the one on bullets as I don't knopw much about guns, or the one about tomato plants as I'm not a gardener, but obviously from the number of replies others found the subject interesting. So as it's the tea room my own opinion is post away, as long as it's not inflammatory, abusive or derogatory to other members.

The option is always there not to read it, so carry on br, I did enjoy the thread on philosophical maxims.

Look what's happening in Russia to see what happens when censorship means there is only one viewpoint on offer. One tearful Russian lady married to a Ukranian told us in Trafalgar Square " I phone my parents in Russia to tell them they are shelling our family in Kyiv and they say, nonsense its your own soldiers doing it because they are Nazi's, we are saving you"

The best posts on this forum are the ones that are only tenuously connected to Model Engineering, whatever that is. I have no interest in steam, but repairs to random parts, unusual techniques, sources, tools etc are important to anyone with an inquiring and practical mind. The basic demonstrations of other hobbies are just the sort of thing I would have joined a traditional club for.

The current thread on Mystery Object I am finding increasingly distasteful…

                      Bob

Before contributing to the offending thread I gave some thought to Bob's concern, because I rather agree with him! Weapons are unpleasant, but then so are sewage disposal, toxic chemicals, climate change, extinctions and accidents.

On balance, I decided there was value in demonstrating deductive analysis as a way of identifying the mystery object. Deducing purpose from the form of an object occurs in all the mystery object threads. In terms of analysis, I don't see much difference between discussing the Antikythera mechanism and Bullets.

Another factor is my distaste for censorship. As a volunteer junior moderator I simply apply the forum's Terms and Conditions and Code of Conduct. In my interpretation, Mystery Object doesn't break the rules and neither do br's "Tea Room" posts, or this thread!

As always, I apologise if I've inadvertently offended anyone. I'm trying to stir interest, not stamp on toes!

I like to see things as they are, but a list of countries bombed by the 'good guys' is too much for some to stomach.

If we're correctly informed then, I'm breaking the law by having as a souvenir the first cartridge fired from an experimental 30 mm cannon I designed. Oh dear.

While I wait for the police to come and get me I shall pass the time by making an almost-relevant post in the Financial Surnames thread.

In fact the possesion of blank rounds, empty caes and projectiles are illegal as these can be re-purposed and re-used. I recommend the thread is dropped.

You want to check your so called "facts" before spouting off. Blanks up to 1" diameter are legal, cartridge cases have never been illegal same as actual bullets haven't, it's only when they are combined with propellant to make a round they require a certificate.

As regards blank rounds I used to drive round with a cable spiking tool and a box of blank rounds in the back of my work car,( the blank rounds fire a chisel through a HV cable). The only requirement I can remember was a company one to carry the certificate to prove you had completed the training to safely use the tool, nothing as regards any legal requirements for having the blanks in your possession.

The last HV course I did was just before lockdown and the rules hadn't changed then. Great fun cable spiking particularly live ones!

It would be helpful if anyone claiming that this, or that, is illegal also includes a note saying which country he (she) is referring to, and if possible the detail of the legislation.

There are 1000 and 1 things that are illegal in one country but not in others, and lots of things that are 'known' to be illegal and turn out to be no such thing.

I have been stopped more than once by a policeman in uniform claiming that some detail of my vehicle, or my passengers headgear, for example, was illegal, when I knew that they were OK.

                                          Cheers, Tim

Apologises for starting the thread "tomato seed reccomendation". I assumed that the tea room was for discussing anything which is not offensive based on other topics I have seen over the years—I did get a lot of good advice though so thanks!
