Maybe they should rename it No Hope Garage! It hasn't quite hit that height here yet, though it's a matter of time. Have to say I'm glad we have a biomass boiler. Less glad we still have the oil-powered Aga – though as it kept us going during the post-Arwen meltdown I can't say too much against it.

I'm reliably informed it's £2.00+ a litre at a motorway service station in the Midlands.

I expect that we will all soon see £2/L soon.

I'm glad I filled my tank right up two weeks ago. I only did 11,000 miles last year.

I paid £75.50 to fill my Corsa tank with diesel last week, I cannot remember exactly how much, but it had only showed the low fuel warning about 18 miles earlier.

                          Maybe this is the reason:

UK fuel duty is currently levied at a flat rate of 57.95p per litre for both petrol and diesel, while VAT at 20% is then charged on both the product price and the duty.

Wed. in Buxton, the Essar garage at our end of the Cat and Fiddle was £199.9 for diesel, Esso was £175.9
                            I re-filled at Morrisons for £165.9

We went to Leek on Thursday and noticed the Essar price had dropped 10p to £189.9

Last time I saw the prices in Lynn, it was 3/6 per gallon. That was a few years ago though…

I used to buy Esso golden for 25p 5 bob per gallon, just over 5 1/2 new pence per litre.

Last week my local 'cheap' garage that continues to stock E5 was @ £1.66/L. I filled my aged 200SX + a jerrycan for the mower and chainsaws – came out at just over £101. A bargain at today’s prices.
It's a bit of a change from my first moped when the half gallon cost 2/4 plus a free pump from the 2-stroke can.

There's no sign of less traffic or folk driving economically – yet.
With electricity prices surging, I can see me sitting at a free slow charger outside Tesco's for 3hrs with a good book before they start charging.

There is little point in comparing really old historical petrol costs – I can remember 1s11d per gallon back in the 1950s. Only a little over 2p/litre back then, but houses were a lot cheaper back then, compared to nowadays!

The problem is the ~33% rise this last couple of weeks, or less. I filled up both cars before last weekend at less than £1.50/l, thanks to 7p/l reduction coupons from Morrisons.

I am not totally in agreement with the suggestion that looking back at old petrol prices is pointless. As a small child in about 1960 father used Shell petrol because ShellMex was cheap rubbish and Super Shell was too expensive at over 4/- a gallon.

Reading this reader query in an old ME from 1969 made me smile in todays harsh conditions 7/2p works out at just under 36p per gallon or about 8p per litre.

Hi, the earliest price I knew of petrol was about 1970 when my late older brother filled up his car, it was 1/9 (8.75p) a gallon and there was much criticism when it jumped up to 1/11 (9.58p). I last filled up at a Tesco's on the 6th of this month and diesel was 151.9p litre, I passed the same place this morning and diesel has gone up to 165.??p a litre since then.

I’ve mentioned this before … but it probably bears repeating:

Around 1965, my Dad pulled into the local filling station and asked the attendant [remember them?] for a Pound’s worth of Petrol … I still remember the incredulous reply “a motorbike won’t hold a Pound’s worth!!

But it did [just] … because Dad’s bike had a 5-Gallon tank.

Back in the days when I drove Reliant three wheelers, I tried to get my Robin 850 to get 60 mpg, and after weeks of driving very carefully, I gave up only having achieved 59 mpg. Now my Corsa 1.7 with 3 1/2 times the power gets 60 mpg easily and 48 mpg in town driving.

Hi, in retrospect, I think the prices I quoted for petrol that my brother paid are wrong and I think it was 3/9 (18.75p) going up to 3/11 (19.6p) a gallon and I think it was a gallon of paraffin that I sometimes had to go and fetch from the ironmongers that cost 1/9 a gallon.

Hi MichaelG, yes I do remember attendants, but by the time I started driving most of the locals were self service, but I did get caught out in Birmingham once, when a young lad came running out shouting "we serve you" of course I did apologise for my mistake and think he said that I wasn't the first not to notice the sign saying so.

                                                      Regards Nick.
