Hi I am making a new feed nut for a viceroy lathe and it appears to me that there is something missing currently the feed nut is only supported by the 1/4 bsw screw .
there is a boss on top which is half an inch – 0.001 going by the drawing but currently fitting in a 19/32 counter bore see picture.
Now should there be a collar of some sort that fits in the counter bore and on the boss of the feed nut.
Now to the drawing it states that the fixing screw is marked out on assembly as the drawing shows the fixing screw on the same centre line as the screw and it would be easier to do when machining the boss.
Depending on the machining of the dovetail and the part that holds the handwheel end of the screw there will be some tolerance on where the centreline actually is. While idealy the boss on the nut would be longer and a good fit in a hole so there is no play (as in the Boxford design), if the screw can be done up tight then there should be no play. Then it becomes more important to get the 'height' of the nut correct, perhaps with shims.
