      I can understand the warranty being voided, but to disable your phone with a form of corporate ransomware seems crazy to me

          The critical thing is "Apple store staff told me there was nothing they could do and the phone was now junk".

          So buy another phone.

          Typical modern corporate piracy.

          Like HP and Epson printers failing to "recognise" print cartridges that aren't manufacturer originals.

            As I understand the killing of the phone only happens if the fingerprint device has been changed

            which if you have set up your phone to use your fingerprint to access banking etc is a good security feature if just by replacing the module someone else could impersonate you.

            I dont think theres any suggestion that apple wont repair at one of its centres at your cost but having one repaired is nearly as much as a new one
