        Hello

My name is Mick and I am 62 years old. I dont really think I am a model engineer but I do have a well equipped home workshop with Boxford AUD lathe, Richmond mill, pillar drill, gas and electric welding equipment and much more. I,ve been a lurker on this site for years and found it very interesting.

Now my reason for joining is to ask a question for my Dad who is a model engineer but computer illiterate and he will not get into computers. He's been subscribing to ME since the 60s and has a massive bound collection. So I am asking this question on his behalf.

What are the tooth numbers of the 4 pick-off gears on the Centec 2B automatic traverse? I believe they are 20DP but not certain?

        Many thanks in anticipation.

        Mick

          Mine are 15, 23, 32 and 40.

My gearbox is setup with the 15 driving the 40 and I almost never change 'cos I've modified the motor to accept 240v from an inverter which I use to control the speed and direction of traverse – see my Centec folder.

Thank you very much. My Dad will be made up.

Mine are 38/17 and 32/23 combinations. These both provide the same centre to centre of 2.95/2" Gary's do not.

I think my alloy end cover may be a little sloppy as the centre to centre distance did not match.

My gears have been replaced at some time and not all of the originals are there to be found. I've only used the 2" combo as mine also has a VFD which seems to cover all the feeds I have needed, or might need.

An alternative route would be to work back from the worm drive and table reduction drive to arrive at the feed rates quoted in the literature!

Edited to add that there is a pic with countable gear teeth on the lathes dot co site.  The smallest gear is a 15.  As the centre to centre distances for 15 and 38 is 2.85/2" and that for a 23 and 32 is 2.95/2", we may have a problem, Houston!

Mine works and so does Gary's!

                Hello Mick,

You don't have to be a model engineer to stick around here, just into machining!

Correction here. Gary's 40 and 15 give a centre to centre of 2.95/2".

I misread his tooth counts, 'cos mine has a 2" gear of 38 teeth.

                  So either

40/15 or 38/17 will go along with at least the 32/23 pairing

                  .Apols. Must read more carefully!

Many thanks for the information. I ve passed it onto my Dad complete with pictures from the Lathes dot co site. He is made up with the information and is going to machine his first ever gears as a result of this information.

                    Thanks again Mick
