I thought I would mention this because it possibly means that X86 stuff on a mobile/tablet platform could be heading for oblivion

Instead of all your old but good Windows programs running on a future tablet only W10 stuff will run on the newer ARM architechture

No doubt emulator stuff will appear but that has never been much use in my experience, emulators can be a hit or miss experience

Soooo. If you really need an older Windows program to run… grab yourself an Atom based unit before they all go.

Intel factory to make ARM-based smartphone chips

Intel has announced that one of its factories will start making smartphone chips based on designs by the UK-based firm ARM.

The move follows Intel's decision to cancel plans to release new Atom chips – processors of its own design created for mobile devices – and last month's announcement that Japan's Softbank is buying ARM for £24bn.

How long before ARM becomes the latest global hate target?

Normally it's made by one or two people and they deliberately keep quiet about it so they can avoid the copyright crew and subsequent lawsuits.

Just look at how riled up the big corps are about adblocking software, now you can see how much contempt they have for their regular users. Dare to do anything that contravenes their interests, and they immediately feel threatened and become hostile.

There isn't enough ad revenue to pay for all the websites that are out there. Sooner or later the big ad-dependant websites will make accepting ads a condition of use, but in the long run I see that the 'micro-charging' 0originally predicted as the model for paying for the web will become a reality.

The number of Atom based tablets and smartphones is already vanishingly small compared to ARM based ones, so I wouldn't worry.

W10 was ported to the ARM v8 processor in the RPi last year so you can run a full Windows desktop (tablet?) PC on it.

Of course, it's essentially the guts of a powerful smart phone and the RPi 3 even has quad cores and tasty GPU, so it had the processing and graphics power necessary. Intel is simply being pragmatic – fight a war you stand a chance of winning!

The Wine team are working on a version of Wine for Android/ARM so you will be able to run old Windoze programs on an Android tablet, hopefully.

Full Windows? When I tried it some months ago, it was very much a stripped-down IOT version – and even that didn't do much without a bunch of additional stuff.

                        Has that changed?
