I have just acquired some parting tool inserts. These are .05", wide despite searching I have been unable to find holders for them. I think the inserts are Sandvik but will not swear to that. Any ideas gents?

Very narrow for a parting tool insert.

I think it more likely to be a grooving tool designed to handle a fairly modest depth of cut rather than going right through. 0.05" wide grooving tools and inserts are around from a variety of suppliers.

          Photo may help identification.

Photo would help. I have parting inserts that are 1mm wide but there are quite a few styles about.

              I've used .05" grooving inserts.

Successful 1 mm wide parting inserts are impressive.

Not so much the insert. More more making the carrier blade blade stiff enough to behave itself in cut.

I use 1/8" – 3 mm inserts which generally are pretty foolproof but they do have occasional moments. I'd not care to go smaller.

Like Tony I have a grooving tool of simlar width. Invaluable at times but gets watched like a hawk with an optiviser when in use.

Very narrow for parting, unless for special purposes, it will be very difficult to identify them as so many are proprietry, as far as I know parting inserts only go down to 1.5mm. I have some Kennametal grooving inserts which go very narrow, but only at the tips, the main body is much thicker, their maximum depth is limited.

I can imagine using a 1mm wide parting/grooving tool on small diameter rod and tube, no need for extra width if all is set up correctly. Recently did some grooving for cylinder fins in EN16T, tool is ground HSS and .60mm width, fin depth is 2mm.

I had not thought about grooving as a use but it does make a lot of sense.

The inserts are .05" wide and approx 5mm in length I can just make out 1125 etched into two of them.

They do look like parting inserts but if they are only .05" x 5 mm they are remarkably small.surprise The 1125 grade suggests Sandvik Coromant inserts, maybe internal groover but I lost the will to live browsing their catalogue.

Pipped at the post by Tony, Sandvik do GC1125 for stainless steel.

My 1.5mm inserts are 0.059" wide.
