What are folks using on here? Some of the inserts look to be pretty cheap these days but the tool holders seem to vary wildly in price. I’ve seen some for under £20 but they’ve been a bit too small in diameter. I want something around 20-22mm to start to see how long the inserts last. If anyone has any links or suggestions I’d appreciate it.

You could try some Little Hoggers. There was an earlier thread on this Thread 120179

I’ve got the little hogger set but they sell the inserts in a set of three, one of each shape which is not convenient for me.

I think it’s time to try something else.

Not surprised Vic those are obsolete. Try here shop apt or ARC and buy the AP## version that suits you and your pocket. You can get the inserts all over ebay as well though maybe to a different quality.

My Little Hogger has done me pretty well but its a violent little beast and the lack of proper speed / feed data has never been that inspiring.

Agree with Vic that it's time to try something else (when the triangle and square inserts die). Never gotten on with the round ones.

Daves idea of the AP## versions seems to be the way to go. £35 or so for a native R8 holder from Arc isn't unreasonable but voice of inserts from APT is bit bewildering. I imagine taking the simple way and buying what ARC offer would work well enough on my Bridgeport.

It's all gotten a bit academic since I bit the bullet and decided to routinely use the Bjur mist coolant system rather than mostly working dry. With misting it's now rare to find anything sufficiently obdurate to upset an HSS cutter. The little hogged is now mostly reserved for first cuts on castings and things that a obviously going to be difficult.

I can’t find anyone else that sells the tips. They are triangular with a hole, and double sided so you get six cutting edges.

I’ve seen inserts for other styles of end mills for as little as about £2 somewhere, hence the quest for a new tool holder.

Although Old in style the Hogger set does have it's uses and are not obsolete in far as being useful.

I'm not sure what the insert grades are but I have been able to cut hardened steels with those that other inserts have been immediately blunted by so the straight one gets used on heavily chilled castings and modifying tool holders.

The 45deg one is a handy chamfering tool.

The round one is good if you want to leave a large internal fillet for things like simulating castings

At the diameters Vic is looking at then the smaller inserts will allow 3 or maybe 4 inserts if you go to 25mm dia but you need to think how you are going to hold those with their plain shanks, the 20mm will go into a ER32 but you get overhang, the 20 and 25 won't go into an MT3 collet.

R8 or MT Body like ARC do is easier mounting and less overhang but it's only a 2 insert cutter so less insert engagement can make them noisy like teh Hoggers and feeds will be less than 3 or 4 insert so take slonger to get job done.

Ideal would be direct mounting with 3 or 4 small inserts

Big advantage of teh more modern inserts is better geometry than the "Flat" Hogger inserts and the availability of the inserts meant for non ferrous which work on all materials and reduce the load on hobby machines

This is the type of thing I’ve seen. This one is only 12mm but I’m sure I’ve seen a 20mm version somewhere but I can’t find it now. The only issue is the shank is a bit long for my ER32 collet Chuck and I’m guessing the shank may be too hard to cut down easily?

Pitty they don't give the full cod eso you know what you are getting, the images show several sizes of BAP300R and you will probably get the single insert 300Rc12-12-120-t1

16mm to 20mm tend to have 2 inserts, 25mm will be 3 insert see apt

                          Found it.

It seems to take these inserts but you can get them for about £1 each on eBay for both steel or alloy.

What do folks think, worth a try?
