It appears that the recent discussion on the power cuts in Europe has been deleted for some reason.

If anyone is interested, this is a link to the report on the large scale power outage in the UK in 2019:

Thank you Stuart. In view of the number of electrical questions asked on here and the several people with considerable knowledge of electrics it seemed a not unreasonable question. Unfortunately some did not see here as the right place to ask such questions and before things became unseemly the moderators closed the thread. Noel.

Question was OK, But the predictable drift to Politics, Climate change etc got it closed.

Lets keep this one to the technical/engineering side of the issue.

Hi, I wrote a reply before the other one closed, but by the time I submitted it, it was closed. What I was saying, is that I remember a programme on TV back in the 80’s I think, about a power outage in a large part of America, and though I can’t remember all the details, they explained what went wrong, and because their power network was somewhat different to ours, it was unlikely the same thing would happen here, although power outages do happen here, but they are normally relatively in a much more localised area, not sure if it was one or more states over there.

They did show some of the effects that it had on many people, as it was out for quite a long period, and one thing I remember was where a woman in hospital, woke up to find a Parson/Vicar sitting in a chair beside her bed, with candles lighting him up, she immediately thought to her horror that she had died and had gone to Heaven, but the minister eased her mind and explained the situation.

            Regards Nick.

Once again Thank you Jason. My question was as I’m sure you knew on the technical aspects, and that it would slide off to other areas was entirely predictable. For those who still have any interest The explanation given in annex A on page 23 of the document shown by Stuart is a brief intro into how things work – or don’t ! The old thread had 2 very interesting replies by John Haine and Dave (SOD ) and fitted my thoughts as to what had happened. Noel.

Hi Nick – I think that was the first episode of James Burke’s Connections series, an excellent production. It covered the New York blackout of 1965 (see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_blackout_of_1965), caused by an incorrectly set relay that triggered other areas into overload.

Hi Rob, yes that’s the one, and yes one of James Burke’s series. He did a lot of programmes  about science and engineering. But it was that ladies experience that I’ve always remembered.

                  Regards Nick.

The only thing that was a tad conspiracy theory was the post saying that the Spanish government wouldn’t rush to tell everyone their power grid had been hacked, if it had been.

Which I would agree with, it would be pretty embarrassing if a 15 year old with a ZX spectrum had shut down their entire grid.

It was interesting to see the BBC tell everyone the 5 things they need to get them through a power cut!

Cash was top of the list, with a battery radio, tinned food, Candles and torches and a power bank for your phone following.

For me a petrol generator is kind of important,  mines fuelled and serviced year round.

My solar panel array wont work in the event of a grid failure but I’m told there is a way to get it set up so you can access the power, must look into it.

I think that the US widespread outage was a failure by one part of the network which overloaded the adjacent one, and started a domino effect.Hopefully, UK and Europe are differently organised, and more resilient

But better to have supplies, batteries, candles etc in stock

If anyone in the NW England wants  a petrol genny for free send me a pm. It last ran a few years ago before I put it in the shed, general decrepitude means I’d struggle to get it out if we ever did have a prolonged power cut, so you’ll need to bring s mate to shift it
