Hi hope someone can help. A while ago I bought some TNMG 16 tips very cheaply on ebay. These have a negative rake and need a tool such as this to hold them **LINK**

I will need 4mm taking off the bottom of the tool so it will fit my toolpost.

Has anyone done this.Is it possible , or am I wasting my money ?

I know the Warco 250 isn't designed for such tools but the inserts have 6 edges each to go at and should last me years of roughing out.

Happy new year to you all..John

I was bought a 16mm shank threading tool and tips at a boot sale only to realise I could not get it low enough in my toolholder. The shank was not hardened but was very tough. I used a grinder to take of 4 or 5 mm and then milled of the last fraction to get a nice flat bottom.

John, you could make your own tool holder, some where along these lines. This one is made from a old car half shaft, for a tip without a hole, it could be used with a tip with a hole in it.   Tip 16 mm, no chip breaker. Ian S C021 (640x480).jpg

                Hi John,

A carbide end mill will easily cut your holder, or if your have a bandsaw you can saw off the case hardening at the bottom and then mill or file to final finish, well I could on a Sandvik one and I don't suppose RDG ones are made of any better materials.

Buying and then modifying oversize pre-owned toolholders can be cost effective as the hobbyist sizes tend to command higher prices on the SH market.

Despite what Chris says some holders will not respond to carbide, I took the edge off three tips using my 40mm cutter a couple of days ago to "adjust" a 16mm boring bar. Though the sparks it threw out were quite impressive.

                    Hi Jason

Please not I said "end mill" not face mill or inserted cutter mill, I favour 10 or 12 mm solid carbide from lovely young Jenny at JB. Your tooling is likely to have too many "hammer actions" for the job in hand unless you approach the cut from the other axis to allow more than one tip to be in contact at the same time.
