I have never used indexable turning tools before but thought I would try it just for fun. I bought some Glanze 10x10mm and a Myford 12x10mm (type to sit on the boat) at a car boot sale and now realise the drawbacks – all the screw heads (torx or allen) are burred over and even with a magnifying glass the thread is so tiny it is impossible for me to match the screw to the thread gauge with my old eyes and fingers! At £2 a screw from Chronos for the 5 Glanze tools I would rather get a generic screw if I could find out the thread, as no doubt the Chronos head from India will burr over again soon enough. I could drill and retap for a screw more sensible (ie larger), but as I say it was just for fun and I don't think I want to put a lot of effort into this before they fall into my bin. I have also realised the second drawback – this old Myford indexable tool requires a cutting bit that is not a simple equilateral triangle and I wonder is it possible to still find them (not from Myford/ RDG I bet)? Any help much appreciated.

By the way, this Myford tool has MUR12R90 on it, and the shank is about 12mm high and 10mm wide, if that helps

Thread size on the 10 x10mm Glanze tools is 2.5mm.

"M2.5 Torx" gives plenty of results on e-bay

I've not had problems with teh supplied Glanze ones, just make sure you clean the muck out before trying to undo then so the tool fits right into the hole.

Hi Jason, Are the Glanze screws M2.5 torx? Do you know what the Myford screws are? Many thanks for your help, Adam

Many thanks to you too Howard. Re the Myford, would they be a BA thread or BSF do you think?

Jason, on a different matter, what tips do you use? These 10×10 Glanze tools came with very chipped equilateral triangle tips (presumably Glanze) and I was wondering if there was a sharper stronger tip that can be used on the tools? Adam

All my Glanze tools have the M2.5 but they are not the ones that take the triangular tips, I have the 80degree Rhombic shape or round button ones. I do have tools that take larger size tips by other makers and these need a larger screw

The chipping is likely to be from misuse they should be strong enough to stand upto our type of use but all are easily damaged if knocked, run into stationary work, used at wrong height or run beyond centre.

There are many variations of tip to suit specific materials and depth of cut but a general purpose one should do fine for all our work on steel and iron, for nonferrous then the sharper edged ones specifically for nonferrous are very good but not sure without looking if thay come in the triangular shape.

I have a bit of a mix of tips on the rhombic CCMT I use Seco, Kennametal, Sumitomo and on the sharper nonferrous CCGT ones I'm still on my original couple of Glanze ones but have some Sumitomo in reserve

Never had a myford one to know what they used for screws.

I doubt you will be able to drill the holder out and tap for a larger size as the holders are usually hardened and the larger screw would not have the correct steep angled CSK under the head.

The reason why I am particularly interested in tips and screw for this Myford tool is that it slots into a Myford boat for height adjusting and so could be useful..

Please measure the diameter of the Myford screws & also a TPI would be good if possible?

Alright but it is very small and difficult even with my wife's sewing maGNIFYING LIGHT – 10 TPquarterI, ie 40 TPI , and 0.132" external screw diameter. Whether it is infact 38, 40, 42 TPI cannot be certain I'm afraid!

it could be 36 or 44 tpi also (extrapolating to 1" resulting in quadrupling of the counting error)

                                            Probably M3.5×0.6

Take a screw out of an electrical switch plate or socket and see if it fits.

Insert looks like a WNMG would fit

                                              Hi Adam,
To measure the pitch of the screws try this method. Screw the screw into the holder without an insert installed as far as it will go easily. back it off a little. (Say half a turn.) With a micrometer measure from the screw head to the underneath of the holder and make a note of the reading. Now unscrew the screw an INTEGRAL number of turns. (Say 4) Measure from the top of the screw to the underside of the toolholder again. Subtract the first reading from this reading and divide by the number of turns. This will be the pitch.

                                              Les.

Jason the WNMG bulge exactly bisects each side of the equilateral triangle whereas the Myford has a more complex off-centre (sharp) bulge on each side that implies probably a different tip is required for right hand and left hand tools (which sort of makes the appeal of one-size-fits-all tips redundant and might explain why Myford dropped the product).
