G'day, thought I'd introduce myself formally.

I live in Sydney of central/east European extraction.

I'm a bamboo fly rod maker but I'm trying to teach myself to repair, with the eventual aim to add reels to my repertoire.

Since I'm a fly fisherman and I get a sense of pleasure and achievement from making things with my hands I pursue making fly fishing equipment & tools.

I've already posted a thread about "help with screws" and members have been very helpful.

      So thanks for the help.

      Boris

              Hi Boris ,

Also from Sydney and welcome to the forum .

Life long fisho – not so much with the fly but i used to build my own rods , mostly for beach and estuary fishing but they were all from modern materials like fibreglass and graphite . I thought that making split cane rods had become ( unfortunately ) a lot art in Australia and it makes me ever so happy to see someone practicing the art !

The feeling of catching a fish regardless of size on something you have created whether it be a fly , lure ,float , rod or reel is something only a Fisho knows !

              Ian.

Split bamboo rod making has made a resurgence in the last 10 years or so. This includes Australia. In fact there's a bunch of us who get together each year in Tasmania at Cressy for the "Cressy Cane Rod Makers Gathering".

We do all the typical stuff like casting techniques and guest demonstrators for practical workshops etc etc.

**LINK** this year was a "virtual" gathering.

And you're right, making a good and aesthetically pleasing rod, or reel and flies that allow me to fool trout in style is a fine thing that makes me feel human.

                  Cheers

Welcome & hello Boris. From sunny Yorkshire.

                    Steve.

G'day, Steve, thanks for the welcome.

I work with a Geordie from Newcastle. I suppose in England that's almost a different world…. I wouldn't think of Yorkshire as "sunny" and I've never been to England, but my colleague from Newcastle tells me not to believe the bad press about English weather. According to him it's well overstated.

                    Cheers

Well Boris we have had a super April. Up to now this month has been very good too. Little or no rain & clear smog free skies. It is so much cleaner without the trafic. Over here you only have to breath once an hour now. laugh

                      Steve.

With a bonus of no jets flying the skies.

                            Hi Boris,

                            G'day from Lake Hume.

Plenty of decent fly fishing places nearby, Mitta, Indi and Pretty Valley Dam among others.

Due to Vic, lockdown rules not allowed to fish or travel but sure have tied a lot of flies during the last few months!

                            Regards * Danny M *

                              Hi Danny,

                              Thanks for the welcome.

Yes indeed, I've fished parts of the Mitta, Indi and Pretty Valley Dam.

Actually, in 2010 I had a great time there one weekend fishing with the first bamboo rod I made. Some beautiful fish in the dam. I remember it clearly. Pouring rain and the creek flowing in was swollen but the fish ran up the creek that weekend and we happened to intercept them.

It's a magic place and these fish are not usually in the creek but in the dam. We were lucky to see them up close.

Yes, that is the stream where I caught my first trout at Pretty Valley Dam but a tiddler compared to your beauty.

A neighbour had a garage sale a couple of years ago, Among the bits was a Hardy split cane 6wt fly rod, he was asking $300 Au so I passed up and waited until the price dropped..

Unfortunately I also set up his Internet and taught him how to use it.

Ebay did the rest, it sold for about $900 Au

Chris, Australia in the 60's and 70's was a paradise. I was born in 1960 so I grew up in those years and it was a good place.

It's still good compared to many others but it is fast being ruined. But that's for another forum!! laugh

Go to that creek late in the season during rain as the bigger browns will run up for opportunistic feeding and or the spawning urge coming on early.

Some rods attract a premium and good quality bespoke bamboo can be very dear. But 900$ for a good bamboo is cheap.

At least you helped him …

                                          Oh how so true.

Here is my favourite little spinning rod. I built this over 20 years ago and as Boris said a decent rod is not cheap.

G.Loomis IMX graphite blank, Fuji gold plated titanium/cermet guides, Fuji reel seat and grade A cork grips it cost me about $400 at the time but worth every penny in the satisfaction of using it over the years.

I have made a few similar for special mates as birthday presents..Usually do the thread art in the colours of their footy team and add ther name in gold Letraset..
