I want to buy parts for my sherline mill from the USA but have no idea on how much Tax/import duty/VAT will be incurred on a bill of£60. Have looked at GOV. and am even more confused,HELP,

does that £60 include postage? If not, any taxes/duties will be paid on the total amount + you have to add the couriers inport handling fee of about £8 to £12.

You will find you are paying a lot more than your original £60.

I got something for 200 from Czech and it was 60

So 30 per 100 is about the tax limit, I would budget for 100

The postage costs can be the big shock from the usa, sometimes doubling the price

I bought a petrol tank from India for my Ariel Sq 4 and the cost was £207, I was then hit with duty which came to £60 and you have to pay before delivery.

              Regards Colin

Have you looked at getting what you want from Mill Hill – the UK agents for Sherline. I have a 1042 (ER Thread) chuck on order from them. Cost from them was about the same as buying direct from the US once the shipping, 5% duty, 20% VAT and the couriers processing fees (£12-18) were added in.

If its a stock item with them, they will also be quicker. My Chuck is not something they carry, but were perfectly happy to order me one for shipment in their next order.

It's clear there is no excise duty under £135, but that includes postage. Then they add VAT to that total.

So if the items and postage cost cost less than £135 it's just 20% vat

Have you checked that your chosen USA dealer ships to the UK?
For items less than £135, I believe that they are required to collect VAT on behalf of the UK, having already registered for an account with HMRC (at their expense), pay the VAT to HMRC, and keep records for 6 years.
You/they could avoid this hassle if you are able to buy the item from them via such as Amazon or Ebay.

If the part is coming via Royal mail then it's plus £8 handling fee

If you get it shipped to a reshipper like shipito.com, you can have it repacked without packaging or invoice, and you can redeclare the nature and value of the item in the newly created export custom form. Perhaps it is used parts, and only £10 in value.

Possibly I shouldn't say this on a public forum, but:-

I ordered £250 worth of lathe toolholders from a small German firm last Wednesday. They shipped them without charging VAT. The carrier (DHL + ParcelForce) didn't charge VAT or a handling fee…

If I've got this right, they were correct not to charge VAT, as the order was greater than £135; assuming they declared the package correctly, it should have been UK customs who dealt with any import duties taxes etc.
