I am just starting construction of a 5 inch gauge LNER Y4 and am trying to source some materials. The plans are imperial sizes and for the frame plates in need some 1/8 steel. I know I can purchase the laser cut part but I’d rather make it myself.

      1. Can anyone recommend a supplier.
      2. Is there a suitable metric substitute.

It is usually advisable to cut from hot rolled material as that is less likely to move when you cut out for things like horn blocks. Sheet was the usual choice but that has gone over to metric so you would have to use 3mm thick and adjust sizes to suit. 3mm hot rolled flat strip is also available which may be more practical than sheet. Have a look at M-machine who have flat strip and sheet or Reeves who do sheet cut to strips

          Thank you.

In Doug Hewsons construction series he recommended cold rolled annealled CR4 steel plate.

Yes if it is annealed bright or hot rolled then they should not move move
